Orkney Wine Company: Orkney Wine Company

by Freja1981

Amazing wine might not be what you would expect from the Orkney Isles, but the little Dutch family has made this a MUST place to visit in Orkney. The wines are made in a traditional way with berries, flowers and vegetables, many locally grown in the clean island air.The alcohol content is higher than from grape wines and this is all by natural fermentation. Only the 18 Carat, the carrot-whisky wine is fortified. The majority of the wines are sulphur-free, alcohol is the preservative. No hang over with Orkney Wine! All wines are suitable for vegetarians. Blueberry Hairst: Blueberry wine. Full bodied, smooth, velvety and big on flavourGooseberry: Made with Orkney grown gooseberries. Clean, nice crisp fresh fruit, well balanced full palate. And many more! Prices are between £7.99 to £17.75..it worth it!

Icecream!!!

by engeluna

There are a few shops in Stromness, one of which is the local grocery.Everyone with a sweet tooth should try out Orkney's famous icecream! It is delicious! All of Orkney's products are amazing to tell you the truth. The fish is always fresh. The cheese is delectable. And the icecream is like no other. Lactose intolerants beware. It could be hard to resist!

any foodstore: local cheese

by margaretvn

the local Orkney cheese is delicious and taken for a picnic lunch with fresh bread and fruit and it is a feast! Try it sitting overlooking the sea in a quiet place and its heaven - better than any 5 star restaurant

Basics.

by leics

Kirkwall has quite a lot of shops, but it took me ages to work out where the supermarket was hiding! If you are self-catering you need to buy the basics at a reasonable price........boring, but true. Kirkwall Safeway is small but ok, easy to find once you know the way (ask!) and I think there's a Co-op supermarket nearby too. Obviously, local produce is much better than imported so make sure you use the small shops too. Beremeal biscuits and oatcakes (bere is an ancient type of barley).Orkney beef (wonderful).Orkney cheeses.Orkney veggies are fresher and tastier than imports.Highland Park.

Ortak: Orkney jewelry

by margaretvn

The Ortak Jewelry factory shop in Kirkwall is interesting to visit and they have some really beautiful silver and gold jewelry. The designs are all Scottish and there is a good range of prices. It is here that you can also ask for the key to go into the earth house which is very close to the shop - that is worth going into. The steps down are steep and it is tiny and very dark in the underground house. I bought some lovely silver earrings but there is a wide range of goods the prices vary a lot.
