CROFTERS: The bistro at the beach - a sensational place!

by JessH

*PHOTOS COMING SOON.We discovered Crofters on our 2nd day in Rosemarkie. As our cottage ("Rowan Cottage": see my separate Hotels & Accomodation Tip) was just 2min walk from the beach, Crofters was an obvious choice for us to try on an evening where we didn't feel like cooking... and boy, are we glad we did!Crofters is run by a husband-and-wife team (Glenn is in the kitchen, and Paula serves the guests) but the quality of food, the quality of the service and the sheer ambiance of the place rivals many establishments that have a large number of staff! The interiors are lovingly decorated with old photographs of the village and neighbouring areas. There are about 10 tables with space for approx. 50 guests. As a starter (on our first visit), I ordered mussels (£7.50). They were fresh, sweet, perfectly cooked and a delight to eat (I was sad when my wee bucket was empty :-( My aunt ordered...

PAPA ROCK: Aviemore's newest restaurant rocks! (year 2011)

by JessH

We were passing through Aviemore and were hungry for lunch. Papa Rock is located right in the heart of town and looked promising - and it did not disappoint! The interiors are reminiscent of an American diner / Hard Rock Cafe. A host of guitars and music industry memorabilia adorn the walls; live music is played on a regular basis and there is even a motorbike by the doorway to add to the rock and roll feeling. Papa Rock picked up the prestigious "Young Business of the Year Award 2011" - well deserved in our opinion. We were promptly seated and the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Their menu is absolutely huge, so it did take us a while to choose. None of us were too hungry... so we thought we'd order some small snacks - be warned! Portion sizes here are generous!I ordered the Caramelized Red Onion and Goats Cheese Tartlet (£8.25), which ended up being 2 large tarts and salad! Very...

SUTOR CREEK CAFE (Cromarty Harbour): An unexpected gem for foodies in the north

by JessH

Sutor Creek is another one of those typical eateries you can expect to find in the Scottish Highlands: quiet & unassuming from the outside, surprisingly remarkable on the inside with unforgettable food and warm, heart-felt staff and owners!Located in Cromarty Harbour, exactly next to EcoVentures (Dolphin tours), Sutor Creek attracts a regular crowd of tourists for a hearty lunch before their boat trip, or for a warming cup of tea & a slice of home baked cake afterward. In our case we decided to have lunch here before our boat tour, upon recommendation of my in-laws who had been here a few times already. We were not disappointed! In addition to their seasonal menus full of freshest local produce, they also offer a selection of traditional artisan pizzas, homemade dough baked to crispy perfection in their traditional wood-fired oven. Both men in our group enjoyed the Flank Steak Sandwich...

THE ROB ROY BAR (Balquhidder): A tiny pub with a big name & pride

by JessH

The Rob Roy Bar is adjacent to the King's House Hotel, and after visiting Balquhidder we decided to stop here for a small lunch and to dry-out after the consistent drizzle outside. After all, since my wedding in 2009 I am now an "official McGregor" ;-)This tiny bar seats around 25 people at 4 tables and the bar, with a rustic open fireplace in the corner and lots of memorabilia of the man himself and the Clan McGregor.Meals from 11am onwards, offering a selection of home-cooked traditional bar snacks and small hot meals. Also boasts a good selection of malt whiskies from the Highlands. Service was as welcoming and hospitable as only family-run establishments can be. We enjoyed a piping-hot carrot and tomato soup together with cheese and onion toasties (£ 4,95) The dish was nothing fancy, but it was incredibly fresh and tasty and just what we needed to refuel our batteries for the long...

THE ANDERSON (Fortrose): Fantastic award-winning eatery with local produce

by JessH

In July 2008 we booked a table for dinner at the Anderson upon recommendation of my parents-in-law, who had been there during their previous holiday and couldn't stop talking about it... since then there's been no looking back and every time we're in Scotland we keep on returning time & time again :-)The Anderson is an old pub that has been transformed into a cozy and comfortable dining area downstairs, as well as a whisky bar with a huge selection of single-malts and others, and even accommodation with 9 double rooms upstairs.Jim and Anne Anderson have succesfully created a cosy eatery where locals mix with guests from around the world.Jim Anderson came to the table to greet us and he's exceptionally good at recommending the perfect tipple to go with your meal. He chose a fabulous Italian red wine for us and chatted for a while about their specialities. Their menu changes every day,...

THE FAMOUS BERVIE CHIPPER (Forres): Award-winning Fish and Chips in the Highlands

by JessH

What would a trip to the UK - and especially Scotland - be without a hearty portion of good old Fish 'n' Chips? The Bervie Chipper was voted the UK's no. 1 Chipper (or "Chippy") in 1997/1998, and as there was an outlet of this chain of restaurants in our area we wanted to find out for ourselves. This is a small, unassuming eatery on the side of the A96 road near Findhorn with large windows, plastic tables and chairs, and the buzz of local families either queuing to take-away their "fish supper" or sitting in the restaurant enjoying what the kitchen has to offer. The decor is nothing special, the service is nothing special, the location is nothing special – but the fish and chips were actually very good, with chunky chips and a nice, crisp battered piece of Haddock. We paid £ 7,55 for our fish supper, and a dessert of home-made apple pie with custard cost £ 3,95. (Prices: year 2008)I prefer...

THE SEAFORTH (Ullapool): Fancy a Fish Supper by the pier?

by JessH

On a daytrip up to Ullapool and a leisurely stroll along the harbourfront in a brisk sea breeze, it's inevitable that you'll work up an appetite and it's also pretty inevitable that you'll come across the Sea Forth restaurant & bar.Its position at the harbour entrance has played a main influence in the pub's development: through the ages it has been a fish and coal store for the steam boats that used to sail from Ullapool, a chandlery supplying the boats and harbour, and a smoke house. In the 60s and 70s it was a pub and inn, and during the 80s the upstairs served as offices for the fish agents dealing with the East European "Klondyke" fishing fleet that anchored in Loch Broom.Today the Seaforth is an award-winning restaurant & pub, catering for the ferry traffic travelling to and from Lewis, visiting fishermen on the international boats visiting the harbour, local daily trade and...

CHIMES TEA ROOM (Forres): Dusted with chocolate powder & a smile...

by JessH

As we strolled down the High Street of Forres one sunny midday, our noses caught a whiff of freshly brewed coffee and the unmistakable smell of "still-warm-fresh-out-of-the-oven" baked goods.Just as we pondered whether it's time for a hot cuppa and a slice of cake, a large cloud made the decision for us, blocking out the warming rays of the sun and convincing us that - yes - going inside for 30min or so may be quite a good idea. This beautiful little tea room and coffee house serves freshly baked favourites and also offers all-day breakfast, as well as lunch time specials including grilled chicken dishes, hot beef sandwiches and of course Fish 'n' Chips with all the extras. We took a seat in the front room, near a pair of elderly ladies who looked like they'd both just been to the nearby beauty salon and enjoyed a bit of hairstyling and pampering. Sporting lightly powdered faces and...

Cnoc-Na-Faire: Aberdeen angus

by kat-m

In the small settlement of Back of Keppoch which is on the old road between Arisaig and Morar you will find this hotel. The views from here are truly amazing and the food a treat. We had Aberdeen Angus fillet steaks which were cooked to perfection. The waitress was rushed off her feet but coped like a trouper and was tipped accordingly. The following day as we were leaving to go home we decided to give it another go for lunch, this was another success bruchetta with tuna and melted mature scottish cheddar was delicious. If in the area dont miss it. Both meals we had were excellent and the menu was varied and catered for all tastes. Visit web site for information and pictures of locality

Prestwick - The Red Lion: tasty, nutritious and affordable

by vtveen

The Red Lion was the first restaurant/pub we saw in Prestwick and we decided to have dinner after a quick look inside. It has a real pub atmosphere, which means (for us): a lot of locals, quite busy, pleasant. For those who don’t know the rules: you order your meal (from a menu or a blackboard with daily specials) and drinks at the bar and have to pay immediate for your order. You take your drinks to your table and your meal is being served. Service in The Red Lion was quick and helpful. Don’t expect a 'French cuisine', but the food is tasty, nutritious and very affordable !!On our last evening we had a traditional 'fish and chips' and paid just GBP 7,- per person. Just honest pub food.
