Ayr has its own international airport, located just up the road at Prestwick.

For more details, check out the transportation tip on my Glasgow pages.

GLASGOW PRESTWICK AIRPORT

Prestwick Airport

This airport, despite nearly facing closure in the 1990s, is now going from strength to strength. There are direct flights with the no frills airline, Ryanair, to many of their European destinations including London Stanstead, Barcelona, Oslo, Brussels, Paris, Frankfurt Hahn, Rome, Dublin and Stockholm to name a few.

The airport is officially GLASGOW Prestwick but is actually in Ayrshire, an hour south of the city on the edge of the town of Prestwick. It has good rail [they recently built a train station attached to the airport] and bus links into Ayr or to Glasgow.

Train on station in Ayr

Taking the train in Scotland seems very cheap. I took a train from Glasgow to Ayr (and to Prestwick Airport. It was very enjoyable once we found out that tickets no longer could be purchased on the train when travelling FROM Glasgow...

Ferry from Largs to Great Cumbrae

From Largs in North Ayrshire you can get the boat over to the Island of Great Cumbrae.
The ferry carries both foot passengers and cars.

PASSING PLACES

If you are driving and hit some of the single track country roads, you'll find that they tend to have regular passing places. If you come across another car then whoever is closest should go into a passing place, whether than means reversing or not. Please don't use them as laybys to stop in

To Ayr from the South.

I found going to Ayr from the South was far easier coming off at junction 12 on the M74 and heading straight to Ayr.

We came back on the Dumfries road which took ages and we got constantly stuck behind slow moving vehicles on single track roads, no way of safely over taking without a risk.

We always love to go cycling on holidays. In Ayr we rented very good bicycles from AMG, they have a shop near the city centre. The cost is 12.50 GBP a day or 15 GBP for a weekend....

Contact:
www.amgcycles.co.uk or email info@amgcycles.co.uk / You can book your bikes to pick up at the Ayr shop and it is only £12.50 per day / Or you can phone the number below. Tel: 01292 287 580

Ayr has an excellent rail connection with Glasgow - Glasgow Central station.

There's the tricky bit. If you're traveling from anywhere else - say Edinburgh or Perth - it's not so great. In that case you have to take a train to Glasgow Queen Street station, and then walk 10-15 minutes to Central station for the Ayr train.

And remember - it rains a lot in Glasgow. You can get pretty wet on that walk.
