The chosen venue for the recent Glasgow VT meeting and a great one! Lovely cosy atmosphere and very relaxed, so the perfect venue for a get together. Prices are extremely reasonable and they serve a mainly mediterranean style menu which can be viewed on their website. We ate off the pre-theatre menu but they have a full menu as well as one for Sunday brunch and are happy to accomodate any special requirements.

Favorite Dish: I had the Chicken & chorizo stew with potatoes, tomato, olives & coriander and it was delicious :) I had planned on trying the Triple chocolate brownies and vanilla pod ice cream for dessert but was too stuffed in the end! Everyone seemed satisfied with their meals.

Viva Ristorante: Central Italian

Ristorante Viva

This Italian restaurant is centrally located in the heart of Glasgow. It's a large, fairly trendily decorated place, with good food and good service. It has a slight whiff of the chain restaurant to it, meaning that it's not necessarily a very individual place - there are other restaurants similar to this one across the country I'd say, but it would beat most of the Pizza Express type places pretty well although it's possibly a little more expensive.

The restaurant has a pre-theatre menu, suggesting to me that it catches a lot of tourist trade, but there seemed to be a few locals too, of the post-day-at-the-office types.

Funny little touch was in the bathroom, where they had a Teach Yourself Italian tape running. Ok, it's not really the most original of touches, but amusing nevertheless. Shows a bit of effort on the entertainment front eh?!

Favorite Dish: Rather than go for a pizza I went for a steak Diana and I wasn't disapointed. While the steak wasn't as medium rare as I'd asked, the size of the steak was good for the price at 12.95 and cheaper than one I'd had only the other day in the Western Isles which wasn't as good. Minestrone was really tasty and I'd recommend it, although you'll find yourself pretty stuffed in addition to the main meal.

Most dishes were around 7 for a pizza to 10 pounds for a meat dish.

Service is good, both friendly and attentive - we were told the specials of the day about three times. Oh, my, how we laughed.

Battlefield Rest: Authentic Italian with a great ambience

This is a little gem of a restaurant which is only really known by the locals (I used to live down the road). It's outside the city centre but well worth a visit. It is a small Italian restaurant in an old tram shelter type building which is in the middle of a kind of traffic island. Booking is recommended as it gets quite busy particularly on a friday and saturday night. Look out for the lunchtime specials.

By bus get on a 44 which travels from the West End, past the University, through the centre, over the river, past the Gorbals. You will eventually go down a long straight road called Victoria Rd and the bus will turn left along the outside of the park. The bus will drop you off right outside.

Cafe Andaluz: A treat in the city!

This is my favourite place at the moment. The tapas come in 3 lists: vegetable, fish and meat and it`s good to take one dish from each. The food is lovely, the decor and atmosphere captures the look of Andalucia.
There are 3 meal times, lunch, siesta and dinner and it will be busy at all three.

Favorite Dish: I`m working through the menu!

Camerons: No sign of Paris

Carpo 13 reviews

The restaurant is decorated like an old scottish house, doesn't feel like you are in a hotel at all. Excellent service friendly and attentive but not in your face.
The food is really really special, beautifully prepared and presented.
A lot of the dishes have a local twist, haggis and neeps, whisky sauces etc.
The wine list is excellent although a few of the bottles are a bit pricey, £3000 for a 1975 Chateau la Tour, but there is something for most tastes and pockets.

Favorite Dish: Hard to decide if the creme brulee or the haggis and neeps were the best.

Gambrinos: Gluten free pasta!
clivedinburgh profile photo
clivedinburgh 391 reviews

Went here for Hogmanay 2005 primarily because they serve gluten free pasta (I have dermatitus herpetiformis) and had a great time. The restaurant famously does not take bookings so is good for last minute meals.

We ended up giving a huge tip as thanks to the staff who were great.

Favorite Dish: The starter Iordered was parma ham and was delighted when a huge plate came out topped with nithing but meat.

This coffee house, Offshore, was also close to where I was staying and I went there to get a cup of coffee. I got a huge serving from a very friendly girl. I read a paper and watched the streets.
The best way to wake up!!

Amazing and delicious assortment of pastries, rolls and pies both sweet and meat/cheese filled such as sausage roll, scotch pie, cheese/onion pastry, eclaires, donuts, etc. and not that expensive at all - 50 pence for most things. Only thing is that all locations close at 5pm.

Favorite Dish: everything i tried was good

Shenaz: Shenaz one of glasgows oldest Indians

The Shenaz is one of the first and most traditional , meals ,music and decor. There is quite a big difference between this fayre and some of the more contemporay restaurants which have developed their menu to pander to Scots paletes.
This is the type of Indian you might find in san. Fran or Paris and as such holds it's own.

Koh-i-Noor Restaurant: One of the two finest Indian Restaurants I've seen
Dr.Gary profile photo

3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Dr.Gary 2 reviews

Albeit expensive by US standards, the Koh-i-Noor is truly an exceptional dining delight. Ample seating and traditional Indian graciousness. The buffet style ambiance is accentuated by the food being located in the center of the great room and in a circle. The spices were just right to my palate, just enough assertiveness to get your attention but none so overpowering to the flavor of the food they are enhancing.

The head waiter has definite ideas on where you should start your experience but I declined and headed for the mushrooms which were the best I have ever had. Everything was cooked to perfection, nothing was dry or undercooked. I could not find one flaw with the food and the only problem I encountered was from eating too much. I had to go back for 2nds and then be sure to sample every dish as a treat like this does not come by often enough in a lifetime.

If I revisit the Glasgow area I will absolutely have to have more dinners here. The only other Indian restaurant that is the equal of this one for food quality is the Viceroy on Devon Street in Chicago USA and I have eaten at many in-between these two. Do plan on checking the Koh-i-Noor out.

You will thank me!

Favorite Dish: All of them. I mentioned the Mushrooms. The lamb dishes were exquisite.
