Attending a HIGHLAND GAME might be one of the highlights of any vacation in Scotland.
Simply make sure, you go to one of the traditional Highland games, such as Blair Atholl or Balmoral ( where even the Queen will watch the competitions )

These traditional dances get ratings not only for the dance but also for the right movement of fingers, traditional costumes etc...
and these young ladies really fight hard for every point, as it is a matter of honor to be perfect !

" Tug of War " is one of the standard-competitions of each Highland game.
This pic was taken in Falkirk, where a less traditional Highland game took place.
It was rather something like a high-school-competition, but called and announced as a " Highland Game "

" TOSSING THE CABER " is mainly a case of technique - and most really strong men had NO chance against ordinary athleths from Scotland. - This piece of wood has to fall over once and lay on the floor as close to 12.oo as possible - and not roll to the left or right, when falling down...

It was an Austrian, who won the competitions for the " Strongest man on earth " several times - and was best in so many of the events , where strength was important, but finally lost against a scotsman, beeing used to " Tossing the Caber "

Scotland has a history of Clans and they are very proud of their heritage. If you get a chance look around a local musum and learn a little of their colourful history and what makes Scotland so unique.
They are and always will be a fiercly independent people but they are hospitable and jovial. They love a drink and a laugh. Just let your inhibitions go and join in.
