Dundee Tourism - Desperate Dan

    Dundee is famous for ...

    Jute, Jam and Journalism

... that is the Jute Mills and related industry, and shipping ...
... fruit processing from local farms famous for raspberries ...
... comics and their larger than life characters like Desperate Dan (to be found in the centre of town, as a statue).

Dundee is digging itself out of a hole, marketing itself on the wake of the locally famous sailing ship - Discovery. This was Captain Scot's polar exploration ship, now the attraction for a pricy 5 star tourist centre, moored between sea and roads.

So some great brain invites you on every piece of marketing to "discover Dundee". You'll be sick of discovering and all other attempts at alliteration by the end.

Dundee remains a city rough at the edges, depressed and dirty in places, even with its fine attractions and green parks, hillside and view over the Tay Estuary. Pick your way through the sub average city scape and you will find really fine architecture and seriously interesting sites ... but it becomes quite tiring and all in all, a day is enough.

Head out into the Angus Glens or over the Tay into Fife, west into Perthshire or north into the Cairngorms for a little calm and cleanliness.

  • On Perth Road, near the University - the nice part of town - the DCA is the best place in Dundee!

Lively Bar Scene, trendy and a bit pretentious even, though thats a big word for Dundee.

Has art displays, but is best for its cinema screens showing high class films.

Definitely the place to spend a few hours / meet friends / rejuvinate your senses.

  • Industrial Heritage made interesting - this old Jute Mill tells the story of the British Empire and colonialism as well as the industrial revolution and subsequent demise ...

... and you get to learn how the machines worked, see demonstrations, weave and make rope.

    Surprisingly good fun!

Simple cafe on site - allow more time than expected, 1-2 hours should do it.

Opens at 10am, but cafe opens at 11am.

Explore the local coutryside on foot.
Angus also has many miles of coastline. Coastline that varies from manmade sea front, to wide sandy beaches, to rocky cliffs. There's always something fresh to discover around the next headland, and with waymarked trails such as the Elliot Nature Trail and the Arbroath Cliff Nature Trail, finding your way round is easy too. Angus also has a host of country parks which cover hundreds of acres of both maintained and 'wild' land. They generally have paths laid out for visitors, pointing out natural features.

Dundee was once one of the wealthiest ports in Britain. James II recognised the importance of defending the appoaches to the port and granted a license to the Earl of Angus to build a fort at Broughty on the Tay Estuary.
The fortification changes hands many times, by the time the present five storey tower house was built around 1490
The castle later fell into disrepair, but was renovated in the 1850's around the time of the Crimean War. The castle was bought by the War Office and remianed in service until 1949.
It now houses a local history museum.

Cared for by Historic Scotland and Dundee Council.

  • Claypotts Castle, Dundee - Dundee
    Claypotts Castle, Dundee
    by stevezero
Claypotts Castle is the perfect "Z" plan towwer house, built between1569 and 1588 by John Strachan of Angus. It remains both intact and little altered throughout the years.
The castle owes its unusual appearance to the the asymetrical square towers corbelled out over two circular towers at diagonally opposite corners.
It was later owned by Bonnoe Dundee, and was still inhabited into the 19th Century.
It is open for limited opening days through the year, but the exterior is always approachable.
