Dundee Things to Do

  • Verdant Works

In an earlier age man had been the hunter-gathered while women tended to home and family. In Dundee (when nicknamed Juteopolis) a few men still employed their ancient skills of hunting. They manned ships to hunt for whales in the far frozen corners of the earth. Others built the sturdy vessels that could withstand the crunching of ice against the...

  • Frigate HMS Unicorn

Frigate HMS Unicorn moored at Victoria Dock, Dundee at first glance didn’t look like the breed of fast rakish vessel that had been one of the most successful warships of the age. Masts and spars power a sailing ship and this frigate lacked both. A roof even covered her deck. In the brochure though, the graceful frigate under full sail looked fast,...

  • RRS (Royal Research Ship) Discovery

Rounded the corner of a quayside building, the masts and spars of a three-masted sailing vessel were sharply etched against the grey sky in front of us. "The last Dundee whaler," my brother-in-law commented. After a pause he added, "well as good as - she was built to the same design!"I was viewing RRS (Royal Research Ship) Discovery, built to take...

DCA is a multi faceted place. I was there to see a film - the French comedy Imogene McCarthery - but it also has a bar and restaurant, plus exhibition space. The films are all the kind you won't see at the mainstream cinema. Ours was part of a French festival. It has two small screen rooms. Ours was almost full.Cost £5.50, but they have a whole...

My first visit to this theatre (Oct 10) even although it is only 40 minutes away.I went to see Ibsen's "A Doll's House" with friends. It was very enjoyable, but made slightly mysterious by the set and costumes being 1950s, when the play was written in 1890something and is about social attitudes of that time - fast forward 50 years. It is a small...

  • Trains, Planes and Automobiles

From personal experience of travelling to Dundee from London:Air. London City Airport to Dundee is quick, hassle free, great view from the (fairly low flying) plane. Operated by Scotair, several flights a day, ridiculous pricing, cheapest was $220 return. Haggle with them on the phone if they try to charge more, or go for an off-peak time.Better...

I would suggest that you fly to Edinburgh Airport. Take a day or two to explore Edinburgh then pick up a hire car to drive further north. A car will get you to the more remote locations where you can camp or picnic or stay in a lovely family run B&B where you can witness Scotish hospitality first hand.

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Scotland has a history of Clans and they are very proud of their heritage. If you get a chance look around a local musum and learn a little of their colourful history and what makes Scotland so unique.

They are and always will be a fiercly independent people but they are hospitable and jovial. They love a drink and a laugh. Just let your inhibitions go and join in.

  • Stirling

I don't know if this is really off the beaten path but regardless it is a beautiful town to visit. • Great Castles & Heilan Coos!

Dundee is a nice small town where you'd go to find some peace and quiet, there's not much to do in the evenings by means of nightlife, and shops close very early (5.00 pm or something like that).
