Iron Age Crannog - Loch Tay - Perthshire

by scotlandscotour

This is unique - well worth seeing. This Crannog is an accurate reconstruction of an Iron-Age Crannog researched by underwater archaeologists at Loch Tay. One of the 20+ crannogs identified around the Loch edges is being painstakingly studied - and this is the scientists results - go inside and learn about early Scottish life, on the water!Allow between an hour and half a day, for the tour and playing with fire, and other ancient crafts you can try your hands at. Try fire lighting, hand spinning, wood turning and special festivals like iron-Age rituals, food festivals and storytelling. Great Fun!!!Its located by Kenmore, at the eastern end of Loch Tay, in the county of Perthshire. Its about 40 minutes from Perth by car, though a scenic drive via Crieff then the "Sma' Glen" is recommended (including Glen Quaich).Excellent Stone Circles nearby too! Also see the Fortingall Yew Tree, next tip:

Perth Bridge over the River Tay - a mighty river

by scotlandscotour

The most interesting starting point for exploring Tayside is the small city of Perth, only 50,000 people, capital of Perthshire and once the place where kings met, took power and were assassinated.Perth is where the River Tay enters the estuary, and so the city has a long and turbulent history, ever since the first neolithic settlers rowed wooden canoes up the river. Now life is easier. See my Perth pages or my Scotland Page for information about the whole of Tayside.Go here for more places to see in Tay / Perthshire.

Oldest Living Thing in Europe - Fortingall Yew

by scotlandscotour

Here is a picture of the Oldest Living Thing In Europe, its claimed.Fortingall Yew TreeStill growing despite being burnt, having had processions through its hollow trunk and much general abuse. It struggles on, like the planet as a whole. Many prayers are therefore said, flags tied to the branches, for this symbol of life.
