John o’Groats and Duncansby Head

by JanPeter74

Although most people know the extreme southwest tip of Great Britain, Lands End, its northeast counterpart, John o’ Groats, is less known. The place is named after a Dutch settler, Jan de Groot, who created the first ferry service to the close by Orkney Islands. Nowadays, this place is still an important port for ferries to the Islands. The coast near John o’ Groats is absolutely spectacular. The absolute northeast tip is called Duncansby Head. make sure to visit the spectacular coast at Duncansby Head and have a look at the Duncansby Stacks, that rise from the sea. Footpaths lead from a parking lot towards the cliffs. Take at least 1 – 1 ½ hour to visit this area.

Loch Maree

by JanPeter74

The picture says it all. This is what Scotland is all about. To me, this is my absolute favourite Scottish loch. Beautiful, spooky, romantic, desolate. These are the Scottish highlands all rolled into one place. Many people who visit this place agree that this is without a doubt the most beautiful Scottish loch. Loch Maree is located some 30 kms. southwest of Ullapool, and 15 kms. west of Gairloch and the Inverewe Gardens.

The Fringe at the Edinburgh Festival

by frank_delargy

If you are Scotland in August make sure you get to Edinburgh to enjoy the Edinburgh Festival, the largest cultural & arts festival bar none. Thousands of artists & performers will be in every possible venue doing every form of entertainment possible. There is music, dance, theatre, arts, etc everywhere. This picture is of a group of musicians in traditional (since Braveheart) Scottish dress, playing traditional Scottish instruments. They sounded great, but I don't have a clue what they called themselves.

Urquhart Castle

by naruto

This was the most commercialized, touristy castle I visited. And it wasn't as grand or as impressive as some others we had seen on the trail. The ruins of Urquhart is indeed quite picturesque, but actually being there, you realized that there isn't much left to it. It has a dramatic past and was blown up in the late 17th century to prevent it from being a Jacobite stronghold.Urquhart Castle is situated in a very strategic location, sitting as it does on a rocky promontary surrounded virtually on three sides by the cold waters of Loch Ness which would have been a main route through the Great Glen of the Highlands. What's left of the ruins used to be the great hall, chambers, kitchen, chapel and a tower. They were building the new visitor center when we visited in the fall of 2000, so there were scaffolding and such all over the place. I believe the center and the new carpark opened in late...

Skye – Old Man of Storr

by JanPeter74

The Old Man of Storr is actually nothing more than a large rock, standing on a mountain slope, which resembles a man. Without a doubt a very nice area for a walk, but the stone itself might not be as spectacular as you would expect.

Tip Photo
Skye - Kilt Rock

by JanPeter74

For me, the most spectacular part of Skye was the lookout point at Kilt Rock, which is located on the road leading north from Portree. Here the rocky cliff coast resembles a Scottish kilt. Furthermore, there is a nice waterfall tumbling from the rocky coast and the views toward the mainland are simply awesome as well. (depending on the weather of course) A few kilometres south of this place, a parking lot named after some waterfalls (cannot remember the name) can be found from which you can take a short cliff trail. This area also offers some really great views.

Isle of Skye

by JanPeter74

The Isle of Skye is by many people seen as one of the most beautiful parts of Scotland. Since a few years, this island on the westcoast has been connected to the mainland by a (toll-) bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh. Skye can be seen as a small scale version of Scotland. Especially the northern part (north of the town of Portree) is very spectacular with Kilt Rock, the Old Man of Storr and great views towards the mainland, as well as views as far as the Outer Hebrides to the northwest. On the centre of the island, the Cuillin mountain range can be seen. In the west we visited Dunvegan Castle and its gardens. We made a (long) day trip to Skye (from Dornie) by car and were able to visit most of the Island, apart from the south.

Tip Photo
Eileen Donan Castle

by frank_delargy

Situated just before the newish bridge to Skye, a view of the most recognizable Scottish castle graces the roadside. You can easily park, walk across the lovely bridge to the castle, walk around the castle exterior, take pictures galore, all for no cost if the visitor centre is closed. If the visitor centre is open, it costs about $3.75 to get to walk out to and enjoy the interior of the castle.Pictures from the parking lot are still free :-) Schedule: The Castle & Exhibitions 10am - 5.30pm Every day 1 April - 31 October Visitor Centre:(gift shop, coffee shop & toilets) 10am - 5pm Every day 1 April - 31 October Gift shop Open all year The current castle was rebuilt from the ruins of more ancient castles. Actually, as old buildings go, the current reincarnation is quite new, about 70 to 90 years old. The old castle was actually attacked by Government warships in 1719 and left in ruins and...

Tip Photo
North(-west) coast of Scotland

by JanPeter74

Many people who visit Scotland do not cross the imaginary line running from Inverness in the east to Ullapool in the west. As a result, the upper 1/3 of Scotland is far less visited than the rest of the country. What a shame, because this area is absolutely stunning. Here you can really experience that desolate feeling of being all by yourself, surrounded by nothing more than nature, sky and water. When visiting by car, it will only take you 3 or 4 days to have a general idea of this fantastic area. My suggestion: Follow the coast. 1 day from Inverness to John o’ Groats, 1 day for a daytrip to the Orkney Islands and back, 1 or 2 days from John o’ Groats to Ullapool along the north and northwest coast.

Castle Urquhart

by JanPeter74

This red stone castle is one of the nicest we visited during our stay in Scotland. The name is pronounced somewhat like “urg-hart”. The castle (ruins) is very nice and the location on the banks of Loch Ness is simply awesome. Although I normally am not a big fan of historic audiovisual shows, this one is really good and not so long, so I would suggest you take this one as well.
