Loch Ness

by JanPeter74

Loch Ness is the deepest and largest of the Scottisch Lochs. The long but narrow loch leads from Inverness towards the southwest, slicing Scotland almost in half. The loch has a very famous or notorious reputation because of the assumed sightings of the “Monster of Loch Ness” or “Nessie”. However it is hard to match this spooky reputation with reality when you look at the calm water with a bright blue sky and the sun above your head. The main road leads along the north shore of Loch Ness and somewhere halfway, you will find the picturesque Castle Urquhart and the village of Drumnadrochit, which is the centre of the on-going Monster-hype. Compared to the beauty of the Loch and the castle, the village is however rather disappointing. Several Monster exhibitions and gift shops but little more than that. I suggest you spend your time at castle Urquhart.

Glasgow

by JanPeter74

A little west of Edinburgh lies the city of Glasgow. Although not such a tourist highlight as Edinburgh, Glasgow (which is also the bigger of the two) has more city atmosphere. Edinburgh simply seems one big tourist attraction.Built on the banks of the river Clyde, Glasgow has a lot of nice buildings and streets, but misses really tourist highlights. All in all, a nice location to spend some hours during a trip to Scotland. One must-see in Glasgow however is Willows Tearoom. This tearoom is completely designed and decorated by Scotland’s number 1 artist: Rennie Mackintosh. The Scotts seem to be very proud of his art and you will see lots of Rennie Mackintosh style souvenirs all over the country. Mostly objects of leaded (stained) glass, such as flowers made of glass and lead as well as mirrors with leaded details and rims.Unfortunately, we visited Glasgow on Sunday and Willows Tearoom is...

Historic Scotland Pass & Scottish history

by JanPeter74

Many tourist attractions such as castles, prehistoric sites, abbeys, the Dallas Dhu whisky distillery, etc. belong to “Historic Scotland”. Instead of paying admission fees for all of these places, it might be cheaper to buy a 1 or 2 week pass at the first place you visit. Because we were there for 3 weeks, the cheapest solution for us was to become member of Historic Scotland for 1 year. When visiting Scotland you will constantly be confronted with Scottish history. The two Scottish National heroes are:William Wallace (1270 – 1305)whose story is told in Mel Gibson’s Braveheart. William Wallace led an uprising in South and Central Scotland against the English and defeated the English at the Battle of Stirling Bridge (1297). A year later he was defeated and on the run until the English captured him and executed him in 1305.Robert the Bruce (1274 – 1329)Robert the Bruce claimed the Scottish...

The beautiful sands of Arisaig beach

by frank_delargy

On the road to the Isles from Fort William to Mallaig there are some lovely beaches and one of the nicest is at ArisaigThere is a wonderful 'Road to the Isles' website that gives more info . http://www.road-to-the-isles.org.uk/arisaig.htmlMake a point of stopping, getting out of the car, taking the shoes off and walking across the sand. There will be very few people here so you can act as young as you want, not that people could stop some of you :-)There is an abundance of marine and terrestrial wildlife in the beach area.

Plockton .. palm trees in Scotland!

by frank_delargy

Due to fact that the gulf stream bears down on the west coast of Scotland, certain areas have mild enough climates to allow the growth of certain kinds of palms. Plockton exemplifies this and advertises it by lining its streets with palms.Plockton is a lovely town and worth the 8 miles or so drive from Lochalsh to spend a while walking around in it's beauty. It has a wonderful natural harbor, lovely gardens and great pubs.

Glen Coe

by Niekie

If you want to visit the highlands, Glen Coe is an absolute must! Coming from the southeast by road you enter the glen by the pass of Glen Coe. The second you reach the pass, you will be struck with its beauty. This has to be one of the most dramatic, spectacular area’s in Scotland. And even though Glen Coe attracts many visitors, it still retains its majesty.Glen Coe litterally means ‘valley of weeping’ and besides applying to its natural splendor it also has a negative connotation. At the end of the 17th century around 45 members of the clan MacDonald were murdered by members of the Campbell clan by order of the government. The MacDonalds had failed to meet the deadline for signing an oath of allegiance to king William II, and the government, long wishing to supress the clans, took the opportunity to punish this ‘lawlessness’. Cambell of Glenlion was ordered to execute this deed, and...

Sometimes you have to wait for a whole herd to cross it. Take your time.

Beautiful Melrose Abbey

by Niekie

Melrose Abbey is one of the great abbeys that were built in the 12th century by king David I in order to strengthen his hold on the Borders. Although ruined by the English in the wars of independence, it still makes a magnificent site. The abbey belonged to the Cistercian order, and by diligent labor the monks made Melrose into a devout religious, but also bustling economic centre. Selling wool and hides to Flanders, the abbey grew prosperous, and with its wealth came architectural beauty. Now, hundreds of years later, one can still be amazed by the beauty and detail of the delicately sculptured windows and arches that once made up this much loved abbey.Do take the audiotour, it’s great!

Glasgow

by margaretvn

Glasgow has a long industrial past and this is reflected in the city's architecture. There are some wonderful Victorian buildings - which remain us of the city's are of prosperity. Wealth was gathered from ironworks, shipbuilding and the cottonmills. In 1990 Glasgow was European City of Culture - and rightly so as there are wonderful museums in the city. Glasgow's cathedral is an almost complete 13th century church, founded by St. Mungo (the city's patron saint). The tomb of St Mungo is in the crypt. The cathedral escaped destruction during the Scottish Reformation by becoming a place of Protestant worship. The Tenement House is worth visiting as it records life in a Glasgow flat in a tenement during the early 20th century. The Tenement House was owned by Miss Toward, she lived there from 1911-1965. Agnes (Miss Toward) was a bit of a hamster - rarely giving or throwing things away and...

Stirling castle

by margaretvn

This castle is built on rocky crag and is one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in Scotland. According to legend King Arthur won the original castle from the Saxons but there is no evidence of a castle before 1124. Today's castle dates from the 15th and 16th centuries, and it was last defended in 1746 (against the Jacobites). Seven battlefields can be seen from the castle and Stirling held a key position in Scotland's struggles for independence. The Great Hall, the James IV Gatehouse, the Chapel Royal (remodelled by James VI) and the artillery fortifications of the 16th to 18th centuries are all of outstanding interest. The stained glass windows are so beautiful. The Great Hall has been restored recently and is now how it would have looked like about 1500. There is a good cafe for a welcome cup of coffee after all that history. The 67 metre high Wallace monument can also...
