Bridge of Orchy

by Myndo

The village Bridge of Orchy is a good stopping point before you really enter the Scotish highlands. The Landscape around here is wild and has a somewhat "ancient" feeling. The picture is not really showing the atmosphere. Something right like out of a fairy tale. This can be best experienced by Bike. The plants next to the street are alpine, Digitalis can be seen sometimes. As for the animals: here you have the classical scottish sheep (white fur, black head), horses and do not forget the cute highlandcows...The Hotel in Bridge of Orchy has a very good Restaurant. A must for gourmets...

Loch Lomond

by Myndo

Loch Lomond is quite a big Lake close to Alexandria. It was the first lake on our trip ... and there we realized, that we needed a more detailed map. There is a small road (B8372) going down to the lake, we followed it, because we thought it was the way to Balloch.Well it is not, that would have been the next road ... we realized when the lake was on the wrong side...At least it was a nice side trip.If you go there by bike: the area between Stirling and Loch Lomond is steadily going up. Not steep, but, steady.

Edinburgh

by Myndo

Edinburgh is in short a really lovely city.It has everything I would want from a town to live in.A shopping Mall where you get everything you want and need and even more... Go to the Princess street and the parks next to it.An Oldtown where you have wonderful buildings and cute small shops. Walk the Royal mile to the Castle.Towering above it is the Edinburgh Castle. It is a must to visit. You get to Edinburgh by train, by plane by car.If you happen to arrive late at night, take care. When we came back from our trip we were driving slalom around the drunken people that were lying around on the streets (ok, it was 2 o clock in the night)There is always something happening in Edinburgh. So much to do and see....

Make time for glencoe

by DOUGALSMUM

Whilst travelling in the Highlands you will probably pass through Glencoe, if you arent scheduled to pass through Glencoe then make time out to do it-The scenery is absolutely breathtaking. On our way up to Fort William we passed through Glencoe in the worst Rainstorm I have ever driven in-through the rain you could just see the waterfalls-they looked magnificent in full force. On the way back the sun was shining and we could see the full beauty of Glencoe (enlarge the picture for a better look). There are plenty of places to stop and admire the view and take photos, and if you have the time there is a visitors centre telling you all bout the history and geography of the place (guided tours start from here)

Military Tatoo

by lopaki421

It's a grand performance with participants from all over the world. Very dramatic and colorful. The Scots of course have a huge contingent of marching pipers and drums that's wonderful. The excitment of the audience adds to the enjoyment, and it's hard not to get excited! One has to see it during August - the same program is presented each night of the month in the esplanade of the Castle. Just prepare to dress warmly . I highly recommend it.

William Wallace monument...

by joits

FRRREEEEEEDOMM!!!!!!Ah... the famous words of Mel Gibson as William Walllace, one of Scotland's heroes. So quite naturally the first stop on our tour was the Wallace monument. One word when you go there... UPHILL!!! The gift shop is the fist thing you see when you arrive. There's also a very lame sculpture of Mel Gibson as William Wallace. Its hilarious how bad it is. Our guide hated it so much that if he caught anyone taking a photo of it, he would leave them behind. He made sure that we knew it was not a statue of William Wallace, but a statue of Mel Gibson.Anyways, if you want to see the real monument, you have to walk up this long ass trail. And its pretty steep. A good ten minutes of uphill... sheesh. Still, its worth it go up. There's a view n stuff. Then if you aren't tired enough, you can climb the stairs and see Wallace's huge ass sword.

Lauriston Castle.

Originally it was a 1580's tower house. It was extended during the 1820.This palace has Edwardian period interiors. When we went there to visit this palace me and my mother were the only persons to attend the guided tour.

Take a tour...

by joits

A great way to really experience and learn about the place you are visiting is to hire a company to take you on a tour. We took the Haggis 3 day tour which took us to various places around Scotland. There is also a 6 day tour. This was an extremely fun tour. Our tour guide, Pricey ,was pretty amazing. Naturally he knew the history and he knew stories about the various places we've been too... that should always be a given. What made him cool was his ability to make everyone comfortable, he told the funniest stories and jokes and we were even treated to a hearty version of the Scotland national anthem. Check the website for more info on Haggis Tours and what else they offer. Also, feel free to contact me with any other questions...

Melrose Abbey.

by Maurizioago

It was founded by David I in 1136. In 1385 it was burned down by the English Army. The abbey was rebuilt in the 15th century and was badly damaged by the English Army again in 1544 and 1545. It was restored in the 1800's

Visit Nessie at the Loch Ness

by joits

When you think of Scotland, a few things come to mind... haggis, kilts, bagpipes... and of course... Loch Ness!I was informed that the Loch Ness contained so much water that if you combined all the water from lakes and rivers from England and Wales, it still wouldn't be as much as the Loch Ness.So besides being a beautiful place to visit, its got that added quality in that it has the legend of the Loch Ness monster. I'd recommend u visit it with some kind of guide who can at least shed some light on the myth and everything involved with it.
