We spent two weeks in the lovely western isles earlier this summer. We traveled up by bus and as you may have read elsewhere you NEED a car on the islands to get around. The bus services are good but to get to any of the beaches etc a car really is required. We googled a car hire firm called from Laing Motors in Lochboisdale, South Uist. They were really helpful and bent over backwards to get us a great hire car on short notice. It was really cheap too! I fell obliged to write a quick thank you to the guys for really helping us out. Their website can be found at www.Laingmotors.co.uk
If you end up going to the islands I thoroughly recommend visiting the excellent cafe at Howmore museum it really is a treat!
All the Uists being linked by causeways now, there are several options for reaching South Uist. If you come by car, you will have to take at least one ferry. The main ferry routes are Uig(Skye) to Lochmaddy (North Uist) or Oban - Lochboisdale (South Uist). In the north, a ferry connects North Uist with Leverburgh on Harris. On South Uist's southern tip, a causeway has replaced the ferry service there. It now runs between Eriskay and Barra providing a formerly unknown convenience to travelling from Uist to Barra.
The airports of Benbecula and Barra provide daily flights to Glasgow. The Barra airport has become world famous, because its runway actually consists of a beach
South Uist is great for cycling. You don't need to bring your own one -- Rothan Cycles rents them out.
