Selby Abbey was founded by Benedict in 1069 and is one of England's largest parish churches. It is built on a base of sand ( as is York Minster) and some parts of the Abbey collapsed in the 17th century. There was also a serious fire in 1906 that melted the bells but rebuilding and refurbishment has made this one of England's most impressive churches. The interior is based on Durham Cathedral and the tower is Norman but other parts are Gothic, Victorian and Norman.
A notable feature of the Abbey is the 14th century Washington window featuring the heraldic arms of the ancestors of George Washington. The design featuring three red stars above tow red bands on a white shield is said to have been the model for the American flag.

Market day is Monday and the market has 120 stalls making it one of the largest in the area. The market was established in the 14th century by the Monks from the towns Abbey.
The best time to visit the market is on Bank Holiday Mondays when the market takes on a carnival atmosphere and extends to become one of the north of England's largest markets.

A pleasant park that runs between the railway and bus station to th Abbey. Good floral displys in the summer and a good place for a stroll or a rest. There is a cafe at the bus station.

Selby - Market town / Commuter town

I'd love to say that Selby is a pretty little market town and it so nearly is - but sadly it isn't. Selby is blighted by big and ugly industrial buildings from the nearby power station to the huge...
