The Harrods is located at Brompton Road in Knightsbridge in Central London. It is one of the largest department stores in the world with a total retail area of approximately 90,000 square meters. Harrods was established in 1834 by Charles Henry Harrod. Today it is owned by Mohamed Al-Fayed.
Harrods London has a total of more than 300 departments spread over four floors of shopping spaces. Wide range of items are on sale at Harrods such as clothings and textiles, electrical and electronic goods, bridal gowns, sports goods, jewelleries, pet food and accessories, stationeries, health and beauty products, gifts and souvenirs, furniture, food and drinks and household appliances etc. Harrods is principally an up-market department store. It is also very popular with local and foreign tourists. Make it a point to visit London Harrods when you are in London on your vacation!
Gifts and souvenirs are highly recommended at Harrods Department Store.

I love the jewellry. They also have wonderful Christmas ornaments and cards in the fall. Their garden ornaments are quite unique as well.

Harrods was founded by Charles Henry Harrod in 1834 when he opened a small grocery store in Stepney, specializing in tea. In 1849 he moved the business to Knightsbridge to take advantage of the Great Exhibition of 1851 in nearby Hyde Park. At first, the store occupied a single room and employed two assistants and one messenger boy. By 1880, the store had expanded to supplying jewelry, furs, silks, clothing, umbrellas, perfumes, stationery, fruits, meats, and vegetables, and employed a staff of 100.
In 1901, Harrods moved into its present building, which was designed by C.W. Stephens. (The previous store had burned down). The Edwardian-style building is noted for its turrets, gables, and dome, all clad in terra cotta. At night, its outline is illuminated by thousands of tiny lights. The building rises to a height of four stories, and occupies four and a half acres (two hectares) in the center of Knightsbridge. In many cities you can find the Oxfam shops, sometimes also second hand shops in which the proceeds go to animal shelters or other charity organizations, Cancer Research, Red Cross etc
Take your time and browse in these stores, you never know what you'll find. They sell just about anything, books, old records, toys, china, you name it. Some of it is even brandnew, apparently donated by some companies.
It's a great way to cut expenses. I found several nice gifts in these stores, also books, which had been out of print for a long time. If you want to get a book to read on a long train journey, you can grab one in these stores, if you don't want to keep it, give it to a charity store in the next city.
Don't pass these stores just because their ads aren't as big and flashy as some of the high street stores.

Past Times sells gift items that are based on art and artifacts that were found in the past. They carry jewellry, china, paper products, linen, garden items, music, video, and all sorts of odds and ends. You will not be able to leave the shop without being at least seriously tempted by something. Some of the periods represented are Roman, medieval, Tudor, Elizabethan, Georgian, Regency, Baroque, Victorian, Art Deco, and into the 20th century. They also carry items based on the far east, India, Egypt.
I've personally bought jewellry, Christmas ornaments and cards, craft items, linen goods. The chocolate in England may not be in the same class as Belgian or Swiss chocolate but it's pretty damn good. It beats the run of the mill stuff over in North America by yards! Even the everyday Cadbury's chocolate is creamier. Green and Black, found in Tesco's and Sainsbury's is organic and wonderfully rich as well.
If you really want sinfully good chocolate, go to a Thornton's store. Thornton's is a chain of stores around the U.K, that specializes in Chocolate like Laura Secord in Canada. They specialize in Chocolate and toffee goods and while a little more expensive than Cadbury's they are more than worth it for the rich cocoa-y melt in your mouth product.
My favourite is the Chocolate with toffee bits in it. They made toffee in a lot of flavours as well and it's buttery and rich. You can get it in the shops and the duty free at the airports generally have it too.

All over the UK, various regions may be known for certain types of crafts or the area is known for a product.
For instance, Wales is traditionally a coal and slate mining country. Therefore you can get items made of coal and slate in the gift shops. Another item unique to Wales is the wooden carved "love spoon".
Scotland in particular is famous for woolen and whisky. Ireland also as well as the claddagh symbol and Irish linen and crystal.
When you're traveling around, find out what the area is known for and there will usually be some good shops that have good prices on local specialties, be it food, drink, clothing or some other special type of item. These often will make the best souvenirs as well.
I also like to go to art galleries and museums, especially small unusual museums that might focus on something local. I like to get postcards from museum and gallery shops of some of the art works that i particularly liked.
Recently i was in a gift shop in Iona Abbey and saw a liqueur that was new to me. I was given a small sample to taste when i asked what it was like and it sold me then and there. Be forward, talk to the shop assistants about their goods.
Tea towels are also a good and cheap souvenir. I have started collecting them and i use them as well so i can remember places i've visited when i'm doing the dishes, brightening up an otherwise dreary task. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

My boots gave way on me and one of my coats was not travelling well so I needed replacements. Because of the high cost of clothing etc I started poking around the charity shops. Very interesting places! I picked up a pair of leather boots for 4 pounds and a nice black jacket for 5 pound. I picked up the most unusual crocheted woollen scarf which I would never find here for 1 pound. If you are worried about the weight when flying home you can just donate them back before you leave.
There were heaps of good coats, jeans and scaves. While looking for clothing I found lots of bric a brac worth buying. Little jugs, teapots vases and plates etc. These little things are worth buying and make nice gifts. They are cheap and I feel more authentic as they have come out of someones kitchen and not just tacky souvineers made to look like the real thing. Alot were made in England and most were only one or two pound.
