Castles

by tvor

The United Kingdom is teeming with castles. There are stately palaces, elaborate houses fit for kings, large fortified strongholds, ancient hillforts and ruins of old castles and towers pretty much everywhere you go in the UK. Some are restored and you can visit them. Some are bona fide tourist attractions, and some are shells of their former glory, shadows and ghosts haunting the crumbling stone. There are plenty of books and guides to any that can be viewed or visited. Many are run and maintained by the National Trust or the English Heritage organizations. You can buy yearly memberships and then entrance to their properties is free. Worth it if you love exploring these kinds of things!

Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway

by tvor

The towns of Lynmouth and Lynton are neighbours on the northwest Devon coast but there's an over 800 foot cliff between them. There are some steep roads and paths between the two but in the 19th century, a small railway was built between the two...straight up the side of one of the cliffs. It's a funicular style car and it's powered by water from the nearby River Lyn. This facilitated moving goods from the harbour at Lynmouth up to Lynton and thereby making it easier to transport the goods inland, and vice versa. It also aided tourism as the little towns became more popular as seaside holiday spots. The little wooden tramcars, one up and one down, are original. The system uses friction and hydraulic brake systems and the views are certainly worth it! It's a short ride up or down and the town of Lynton at the top is worth a walk around for it's pretty Victorian houses and shops. There are...

St. James Park, London

by hopang

St. James Park is located at Horse Guards Road on the south end of St. James area in the City of Westminster in Central London. It covers a total area of approximately 60 acres which includes a scenic lake with two small lakes in the center. There is a pedestrian bridge across the lake with lovely view of the lake and its surrounding area as depicted in our photograph on the right. The lake is inhabited with flying ducks, geese, black swans, pelicans and many other bird species. The popular open-air concerts are held in the park during the summer months. The park is also very popular with locals especially families with children as a children's playground is located in the park. It is an ideal spot for strolling to escape the chaos of the city!St. James Park is the oldest royal park in the city of London. It is flanked by Buckingham Palace to the west, Horse Guards Building to the east...

West Midlands safari Park

by LouiseTopp

Near Birmingham is the West Midlands Safari Park, there's a large carpark nr toilets which are grubby and almost always out of toilet paper. You can hire a bus to go round the park, but it's always full up so it's wise to book in advance; althrough there's no sign to tell you there's no more room. The Twilight Cave is very intresting, home to a bachelor group of rare Rodrigues Fruit Bats which fly freely round your head. There's stars imprinted on the roof and everything is pitch black, watch out for the silly screaming woman who stepped on my foot; she was more dangerouse then the bats!Outside there's an impressive waterfall which will sprey you if you are in the right place on a hot day. There's a sealion display every hour which is good, most of the seats will get full. You can see Nile and Florida crocadiles and snakes in the reptile house, althrough it's a bit stuffy after a while....

Warwick Castle

by tvor

If you like castles, don't miss Warwick Castle, in Warwickshire. It's all restored and you can climb the castle walls and there are lots of exhibits to check out. The grounds and estate follow the river Avon and are a nice walk on a sunny day. It cost about 11 pounds to get in for an adult but you could easily spend all day there. Also, the town of Warwick has a few interesting spots and lots of nice architecture as well. See travelogue for more info and photos.

Never in my wildest dream did I imagine I would ever get a chance to step into the Royal Albert Hall.I had always thought only the RICH can afford a evening of entertainment in this exquisite concert hall.As it turned out, in the summer, there are PROMS performances where STANDING TICKETS go for 4 pounds or so. Mighty affordable and the concert is very good.

Ok, the reading festival has been going a number of years now an i have been more than twice, every year it is held in Reading town centre (approx 30miles heathrow), and every year you will find the same "sort of" festival, LOUD HARD RIFFAGE, SMELLY TOILETS, WASTED TEENAGERS, AND DRUG TAKING BIKER GRANDDADS, so why i hear you ask do i keep going back?Well the music is the only thing i go for, it's not the beer they only sell one sort "carling", its weak, hooligan soccer stuff, and gives you a headache in the morning! On the plus point this year "the music"(strange name for a band) played to a pack out (you've guest it!
