THE LAKE DISTRICT

by keeweechic

The National Park is 885 square miles in size and is the largest of the 11 national parks in England & Wales. There are over 1800 miles of footpaths through some of Britain's most beautiful countryside. Wordsworth and Ruskin used the area’s natural beauty to provide inspiration for their works. With a mix of spectacular mountains, peaceful lakes, rolling hills and busy little market towns, the Lake District is a really unique part of England. The area around Grasmere, Ambleside, Coniston & Windermere are popular tourists spots for walking and cycling.

NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE

by keeweechic

Newcastle-Upon-Tyne is a cosmopolitan city in the north east of England, in the Tyne and Wear region, which has a proud heritage stretching back 2,000 years. It is the largest city between Leeds and Edinburgh and is the regional capital of the North East of England. There are museums, galleries, shopping and plenty of restaurants and nightlife. Further east, North Shields with it's busy fish quay, and South Shields, known for its Catherine Cookson connections, face each other across the mouth of the Tyne.

Scotland is made up of nine regions (Highland, Grampian, Tayside, Fife, Lothian, Central, Borders, Strathclyde, and Dumfries and Galloway). These regions are then divided into districts, and three island authorities -Orkney Islands, Shetland Islands, and Western Isles which have the larger part of the 787 islands that make up Scotland. Glasgow was originally founded in around 1175AD. Located on the banks of the River Clyde, Glasgow was once a world centre for shipbuilding, producing such famous names as the QE2, Britannia and the Cutty Sark. Glasgow is Scotland's second and largest city and gateway to the beautiful West Coast and the Highlands of Scotland.

WEST HIGHLANDS - - OBAN

by keeweechic

Oban is known as the 'Gateway to the Isles'. The town and surrounding area has been an inspiration to artists, authors and composers for centuries. Oban was once given the royal seal of approval from Queen Victoria when she named Oban as being ‘one of the finest spots we have seen'. The town has become one of Scotlands favourite and most popular holiday towns of the west coast. On Pulpit Hill overlooking the bay is McCaig’s Tower, a replica of Rome’s Coliseum.. There is a short steep walk to the tower but the views over Oban and the bay are worth it.

ULLAPOOL

by keeweechic

Ullapool is a great area for doing some hill walking as well as an ideal base for touring around the beautiful landscaped countryside of the north west Highlands. The town was founded by the British Fisheries Society in 1788, and now has more Eastern European factory ships than Scottish herring boats. Cruise ships can also be seen anchored just off Ullapool..

EDINBURGH

by keeweechic

Edinburgh is the beautiful capital of Scotland and birth place of many famous people throughout the years. Edinburgh’s history began in the 5th century when a fort was built on a volcanic crag to protect Scotland from invading Angles of Northumberland. Building space was limited within the fortification wall, and so the town had to sprout upwards. Today the city is rich with historic buildings, beautiful parks and gardens and a wealth of works from great artists and writers.

DOVER

by keeweechic

Dover is one of the most-visited towns in England largely due to millions of people who go there to cross the English Channel to France or Belgium which means all you really get to see is the Ferry terminal and of course the famous White Cliffs as you leave the shore behind. The White Cliffs are composed of soft chalk, are starting to crumble due to erosion.

York Minster is the largest medieval church in Northern Europe. It was completed in 1472 after 250 years of construction. The stained glass windows are famous for their beauty especially the rose window. The Minster sits on a historic site that dates back to Roman times. The Crypt contains the oldest parts of the building.
