Windsor Castle is a real...

by Willem_oa

Windsor Castle is a real tourist trap.I was extremely lucky when my family and I visited the place, as we got a private tour by some friends who live and work in the castle. After the castle had closed up for the night, we got to visit the chapel while no-one was around. It was a beautiful place without all the tourists shuffling around. As you most likely won't be as luck as I was, skip this castle and visit another one elsewhere in England. There are plenty of less crowded, and probably more interesting castles around!

by Willem_oa

DO NOT waste your time trying to glimpse a shadow of the fuzzy hats the guards wear at Buckingham Palace through the 25 or so rows of jostling tourists around noon! POINTLESS, and again, I say POINTLESS!

London is a massive tourist...

by snowgrouse

London is a massive tourist trap and with its masses, it can cause panic attacks for even the most relaxed traveller. And it's also very, very expensive compared to the rest of Britain. Buy only 'special' things from there that aren't available anywhere else and you have saved money for. If you aren't keen on spending 10 pounds or more(!) for a small lunch, by all means, buy your own food from cheap supermarkets while you're going around London. You're better off in smaller towns when it comes to affordable food and stuff.

by fredless

When arriving at heathrow, take the tube. You should also get a travelcard instead of a single,as it costs nearly the same.Buy either a 1 day zone 1-6, or a weekend 1-6 (valid on any either sat and sun or on sun and bank holiday monday. This is especially true if you arrive in the morning.

Land's End

by Bwana_Brown

Not surprisingly, I found that Land's End was too tacky for my liking. Just a crowded spot filled with shops selling cheap tourist items. I had often read about Lizard Point (in my readings of Royal Navy adventures) and had a desire to see it in person. However, the landscape leading up to the Point was very non-descript and also disappointing to me. That being said, not far away, in Helford, there are many very enjoyable sights such as this one of The Shipwright Inn.

Loch Ness - Castle Urquhart...

by klstomi

Loch Ness - Castle Urquhart is well preserved but avoid the town. Cheesy shop after cheesy shop! If you're driving the length of the Loch hope your not a nervous driver. The road 'clings' to the side of the hill and the drop off is steep in many places. It is one lane each way and as they drive on the left the drop off is just outside the driver's door if your travelling west.

Oxford street, Kensington High...

by buck_turbo

Oxford street, Kensington High Street - crowds that have to be seen to be believed and basically high street shops plus a few tourist tat shops. Oh, and very few non tourists (a bit like most of central London). Special message for Austrailians - If you leave London/Bath/Oxford/Cambridge you will be perfectly safe, and may even see some interesting bits of England.

Piccadily Circus ... what a...

by ucbwalker

Piccadily Circus ... what a vulgar place. The Tower of London ... not worth the 2-hour+ wait you have to endure in the peak season. Madame Toussad's ... unless seeing scores of wax facsimiles of lame celebrities is your thing.

do not go and visit...

by annik

do not go and visit stonehenge. it is very interesting, because of the history of this place, but the whole thing is only commercialised and there are too many visitors. better have a look at avebury for example, there is a big stone circle as well.

# The Royal Picture Galleries...

by ianrmillard

# The Royal Picture Galleries at Buckingham Palace has been officially criticized for not offering value for money. Avoid it, unless you feel like paying £10+ a head for fairly uninteresting paintings and not many of them (in the National Gallery, Wallace Collection, Tate Gallery, Tate Modern, and other places, you can see thousands of Old Masters, Impressionists, post-Impressionist, cows cut in half, whatever, either free or for very little in the way of entrance fees.# Windsor Castle is a ripoff. You don't get to see the bulk of the interior (in fact, very little), as the Queen is often in residence and most of the Castle comprises one of her various private residences.# The various tour buses, which scout around Central London with a guide, driver or recording giving an amplified account of the city, are probably a fairly good way to see the main sights, but are pretty expensive, some...
