The Joy of BritRail!

by londonlover

I enthusiastically endorse the use of the British rail system for traveling across the country. If you're coming from an American (AMTRAK) point of view, it's fast, quite timely, clean, pleasant, and has fantastic views. Overall, it's also affordable, especially if you get a BritRail Pass (available only outside the UK from http://britrail.net) that gives you a reusable ticket to anywhere in the country for a flat rate (varies by type of ticket). I love the train! By the way, don't bother with the expensive First Class tickets--standard class is comfortable, clean and roomy.

Britrail Pass

by Goner

We purchased a Britarail Pass in the US before visiting the UK. It's defintely worth the money and not having to buy tickets for each leg of the journey saves considerable time. We found most UK trains comfortable and less stressful than driving on the "wrong" side of the road LOLThere are a plethora of Britrail pass types, senior passes, 4 - 30 days passes and specialty passes. Check the website below for all the different passes and prices.

The Tube

by Goner

The Tube in London is an old system and much of the network was designed and built over 100 years ago. This makes refurbishment and repair to modern standards slow and difficult. It creates congestion, overcrowding and breakdowns that cause delays. In the meantime, there are some tricks known to experienced Tube travellers which you can use to make your journey easier and faster. For example, don't travel during the rush-hour but within that period there are times when it is less crowded than others. Arriving at your local station ten minutes earlier or later than you usually do, might put you in that "down" time. It can make the difference between getting a seat or not. Tube maps, more tube tips and information can be found on the website listed below.

A great way to travel from the airports into London and around London is with a Travelcard with unlimited travel on London's Buses, Underground Trains, Overground Trains, Docklands Light Rail and Tramlink, for the dates and duration you require. Restrictions:The day Travelcard (off-peak) can only be used after 9:30am Monday-Fridays (from 00:01 Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays) on the day of validity and for any journey that starts before 04.30 on the following day.Multi-day travelcards incur no restrictions and are valid for use on consecutive calendar days.Access to AirportsThe only airport accessible with your Travelcard is Heathrow. If you are flying into Heathrow you will be able to use your Travelcard straight away on the Underground. You will be in central London with no hassle before you know it. Oxford Park + Ride

by Packerman

We followed the advice of a fellow VTer and drove to the first "Park + Ride" we could find just outside of the Oxford city center, which was about a 10-15 minute bus ride. It only cost 60p to park there the entire day!!! As you drive towards Oxford you will see a sign indicating "Park + Ride", follow that sign and park there, the bus will come by shortly to take you into Oxford.

Salisbury parking is very expensive

by Packerman

Parking in Salisbury was even more expensive than parking in Bath. I believe where we parked which was smack dab in the city center surrounded by shops was 5 pounds per hour. As I drove into the city I just couldn't find any parking and my policy is to just go to the center and park the first place available. If you are going to spend a few hours in this city I would suggest trying to find a different parking area than we did, unless you don't care about the cost. Try parking on a street or a little further from the center, maybe it is cheaper.

Cheddar parking "say cheese please"

by Packerman

There isn't much parking around Cheddar, but we were there on a Tuesday in July and we found a spot. It costs 2.50 and I think it was either for 2 hours or the whole day, I think the whole day. Basically if you are visiting Cheddar you can't miss where people are parking. However if you are coming from the northeast you will see people parking surrounded by nature and if you go a little further then you will park where we did, in a regular lot next to a line of shops.

Cheap parking in Wells

by Packerman

Wells was much different than Bath. The parking was very cheap, between 20p and 50p per hour I do believe. Close to the shopping street and a few churches. It is not covered but safe enough. I do believe there were a few parking lots near the center, just follow the signs, it is no problem!

Covered parking in the city is expensive

by Packerman

Bath, being a populated city, was naturally not an easy venture driving into as a foreigner, especially for me as it was just my third day driving on the left side of the road. I am surprised I didn't get into an accident there. It was lightly raining the morning we drove into Bath and I had already passed the "park and ride" areas so I just kept on driving towards the city center. Fortunately I found a parking garage that my family could get out of the car without being rained on. It was very close to the main shopping street, but I didn't have any coins to pay the prepaid meter. I had to run in the rain leaving my wife and 2 kids alone in the parking garage and try to find a bank that would give me coins for my 20 pound bill. Fortunately there was a bank just 100 yards away. Anyway, I don't remember the exact hourly rate but I am sure it was between one and two pounds per hour...
