Passenger & Car Ferry

by Packerman

We drove our Ford Mondeo right onto the ferry and proceeded to get a good ride on the choppy waters of the English Channel. The ride took just less than one hour. Round trip in the middle of the summer cost us approximately $400, but I believe the cost would be more today (July 2003) due to the dollar weakening. It was quick and easy and if you are planning on driving around Europe and Great Britian then I would suggest using Hoverspeed Seacat from Calais to Dover and vise versa.

the tunnel

by margaretvn

We have also taken the tunnel from Calais several times and that is very easy and quick with a frequent service. The time in the tunnel is a little over 30 minutes and you can than drive into London easily. We find it best to take our own car, but hiring is easy and the best way to get to more remote places. Trains are, I think, expensive and the bus service in remoter country places is infrequent.

North Seas ferry

by margaretvn

We take the North Seas ferry from Rotterdam europort to Hull in the north. It sails at 21.00 hours and arrives in Hull at 08.00 in the morning. You can board from 17.00 hours though and they are new ships with nice bars and a couple of restaurants. The cabins are very clean and comfortable.

National Express

by monkeyfeesh

The National Distress (AKA National Express, as immortalised by The Divine Comedy) coach system is probably the most inexpensive way to get around the country. It's far from comfortable, but the number of destinations it can take you to exhaust more or less every possibility you can think of. Personally, after spending six hours having to listen to some guy singing two lines from a Verve song repeatedly and having no way to escape thanks to the extremely large woman who was using half my seat as well as her own, I prefer to Go By Train whenever possible. But sometimes the coach is just more convenient, easier, and cheaper, particularly for overnight journeys.

Rental Cars are Great!

by Bwana_Brown

We almost always fly in to Heathrow from Halifax on Air Canada. In our early London area trips, we just took took the train into London and either walked our used the Underground while in the city. For our most recent trips, I arrange a car rental before arriving and I have found that to be a great way to get around and enjoy the countryside. On our 2000 trip, I booked 2 weeks rental with unlimited mileage for C$600 from Holiday Net in Toronto. We had a zippy standard transmission Ford Focus while in England and I really enjoyed it. For the narrow backcountry roads, I prefer to keep the cars on the small size! Photo of Godrevy Beach on the Atlantic Coast side of Cornwall. We had some great weather (low 30s C or about 90 F) and really enjoyed the chance to play around on the beach!

Rail Pass

by balfor

Getting around the UK by train is amazingly simple. For Americans, the trains being almost like clockwork was pretty amazing. We're used to seeing a train arrive when it gets there and to go when it leaves, no matter WHAT the schedule might say. It was very pleasant to know that I could set my watch by the time the trains took! For some odd reason, one cannot get the same ticketing options when you pre-order from the U.S. (at least that's where I was when I ordered the tickets.) and from the ticket counter at the rail station. I purchased my railpass through Rail Pass Express. It was a very simple process and highly affordable.

PETROL!!GAS!!DIESEL!!American friends! irish friends! european friends! this stuff is so expensive over here, FACT: petrol in england is five time as miuch as it is in texas!, that is all i have to say.go on public transport, it is only 120miles from london to bristol and in a national express coach with speeds of warp factor 7 you will get there in 90minutes tops, tickets are not much past 15quid. Go by train and pay very high prices, with the words ringing in your ears "the next train to arrive at platform 1 is the DELAYED 14:51 SERVICE FROM LONDON PADDINGTON, THIS TRAIN IS DELAYED BY APPROXIMATELY 30MINS", hire a car and say good bye to your spending money. What you could do is buy my nice "mini cooper purple demon great ride" (i made the name up) yours for £600, low low milage!

Getting around London is not that difficult, once you get used to the massive network of the Underground. However, first time visitors migh want to take this Original Tour Hop On- Hop Off service to explore London by themselves.

Long distance travel

by mabu

Use the train or bus for long distances. And a car for travelling around and sightseeing.A few words about the british rail network:- there is not one railway company running in great britain but lots of them. The companies get a franchise for a certain line or region in wich they opperate the trains. this doesn't make it easyer for the traveller as on some relations there are several operators running trains.- I like to use the sleeper service for traveling to scottland, its comfortable and you save time.- never plan on getting there on time...- ask different train opperators for the best deals and timetables.- if you book tickets in advance you can get realy good deals - for timetables: www.rail.co.uk - for booking rail tickets:www.thetrainline.com here you can find good deals for your train travels

Car. If you want to travel...

by A2002

Car. If you want to travel around especially to the countryside and Scotland, it is advisable to rent a car. Train travel is not cheap too. There are many car rentals at the airport. I had bad experience with Alamo National. Very poor and slow service, that's why the queue is the longest of all car rental booths. Perhaps not that they are popular but giving customers lotsa problems. Imagine queuing at the airport for an hour with all your luggages. They try every means to rip you off.. so becareful with Alamo national. Worse of all, if you do not agree with the charges when you got back home, there's no customer service. I prefer Hertz... Not much more expensive than Alamo National. Faster and better service. Faster queues too... Might be cheaper than Alamo too cos they have cheap upgrades.
