GETTING AROUND

by Duffelgirl

Some useful websites/ phone numbers for getting around the UK:Travelling by coach:Lots of detinations in the UK are linked by coach, for times, prices and information visit:www.gobycoach.com (Phone: 08705 808080). By Train:For train times visit: www.thetrainline.comIt is worth registering for free then you can also find out fares and even book online.Alternatively phone the National Rail enquiries: 08457 48 49 50By Airplane:There are many domestic flights linking various cities. The cheapest I have found is 'easyjet':www.gofly.comBut it's always worth shopping around!General Directions:I find www.multimap.co.uk very helpful to find my way around if I need specific directions. For more local details just check with the appropriate tourist information centre.

How to get there

by Kristina1701

The best way to get there is by plane. My favorite British airline is British Airways, by the way. In order to get around hire a car or use public transportations. If you hire a car, be careful, they are driving on the 'wrong' side of the road! *lol* Just kidding,....

Trains are the way to go!

by worldkiwi

The United Kingdom has a very good train network. In the Southeast (where I was living), it is easy to stay out of London, but still get into the city by train.Driving is also good in the UK, though their roundabouts can be a bit of an eye-opener. People also drive fast and impolitely in London. Outside London, driving is usually more enjoyable. Watch out for all the speed cameras that seem to have appeared all over the place since my last visit.

Motoring around the UK

by morgandk

I am a Land Rover enthusiast. Amercians beware, Brits pay about 74p per liter (that's almost $6 per gallon for you Americans!) Roundabouts are great. Look out for the wild teenage driver obviously speeding along in someone else's car- wrecks do not have to be your fault. Motorcycles and bicycles weave in and out of traffic.

Many visitors to this Georgian Town of Lymington arrive by car, or train and Lymington boasts two train stations. Even coaches come to Lymington. With an Explorer Ticket you can travel anywhere you like on most Willts and Dorset buses. With no time restrictions you can make an early start and break your journey where you like (Adult £ 5.50, Child £ 2.75, Family £ 11.00). A Busabout gives you unlimited travel for any consecutive seven days period.

Here's another little sales pitch for Malaysia Airlines. I flew to the UK from NZ, with Malaysia in October 2000. The service was fantastic. We were really well looked after. It is so nice to experience warm and sincere cabin service even when flying economy class! Thanks Malaysia Airlines for making a long and tiring journey as pleasant as possible.

In 1844, a certain Doctor Carus, physician to the King of Saxony, accompanied the entire entourage on a rail journey from London Paddington to Windsor (via Slough): 'The distance from London to Slough, eighteen miles, was accomplished in very little more than half an hour, and at Slough other royal carriages were in waiting' and Edward Jesse one of the first writers to promote railtravel adds '... unrivalled as it is for the smoothness and rapidity with which we travel along it - its punctuality - its arrangements - its comparative safety - the great civility of its attendants and the stupendous cost of its works, which no other country but this could perhaps have undertaken.'What has changed since the good victorian times? It still takes half an hour from Paddington station to Slough however the rest might be different nowadays.Be also aware that you might have to press down the door...

by Dick_Loudon

From North America by plane. From the Continent by channel steamer from Hook of Holland is the way I go.The Tube (subway) and foot. Cabs are expensive but the drivers literally know every address in the area. It's a requirement for their license. Getting around the country, I rent a car or use the train or bus.
