There are frequent buses and trains to and from sheffield barnsley and huddersfiled which then connect to anywhere in the country so its rather handy. If travelling by car penistones only 15 mins from an m1 junction and is alo on the old main manchester road.
The tube was great for getting around London. We walked a lot, but took the tube to get to the general area. It was clean and seemed safe. Become aware of your purchase options early during your stay. It can make the experience easier and save you a few pounds.
Some of the British airlines are doing cheap flight to and from the UK. They generally use Stansted airport, which is a few miles north of London. Easyjet use Liverpool and Luton but there aren’t many budget flights to the north of the country. BMI have recently set up a new airline using East Midlands airport. This is useful for Nottinghamshire, the Peak District and surrounding areas. I generally prefer the trains to travelling any distance on the bus, but the service is getting worse. Out of 6 journeys recently half of them were over 90 minutes late! Plan plenty of extra time into your schedule or for runs to and from the airport it might to worth looking at National Express flight link bus times.
if you do not want to join those london bus tours and would like to do your sightseeings by taking the underground, then it is best to buy a one-day travel card which costs about £4.30 for zone 1 to 2.
By air you can go to any large town in the U.K. Others use the boat and enter England from mainland Europe (Dover, Harwich, Hull, Newcastle). By train (or car that goes in the train) you can go from Calais to Folkstone through the Chunnel (Channel-tunnel).Now-a-days British Rail is under a lot of preasure. The system is still quiet good, but slowly deteriarating. Locally you can use buss-connections which are frequent and eficient. with your own car it is best to see the countryside, as long as you often enough hop out to take walks. By the way ... try to drive on the right side (that is left!). About biking ... well, let's not again start with that (-:
public transport is ok. But try to use it OUTSIDE rush hours.... which is Mon-Fri upto 10am and then from 5pm to 6.30pm. Really you'll be doing yourself a favourTube(Metro), Train or Bus. Outside rush hour they're all ok.
We got there by ferry, somehow slow, but funny. Good connection from Zeebrugge ( Belgium ) and Hull in the north of England.Around we got by feet and by bus. You can get very good connections with National Express.To get to Stonehenge, you best start from Salisbury and you can get there every 30 minutes by bus.
oxford is about an hour and a half away from london by coach and 45 mins. by train...depending on how long you're going to stay in the uk and how much you're going to travel, it's sometimes a better idea to base yourself there and do day trips into london if you don't mind the occasional commute and there are trains and buses to all major towns and going to scotland/ireland/wales as well from here.around ox. on foot...around the uk, coach or train, although the latter is notorious for delays!! have to also mention that air travel from the uk to other european destinations is extremely cheap and you can get really good deals from smaller airlines like ryanair, buzz etc. just one example...ryan air at the moment are doing a return from london-dublin for £9, to germany for £30, so don't restrict travel plans to the u.k. !!!

If you are heading from the south of Scotland up to the Isle of Skye, consider taking the six hour train ride to Mallaig and then a ferry across to the south end of the island. Most people access the island at the north end via the bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh but the train ride from Glasgow to Mallaig is spectacular! We made the trip as it was getting dark and the atmosphere was wonderful. We even saw a few deer silhouetted in the twilight. We stayed in a great little hostel in Mallaig before ferrying across to the island in the morning.
