Travel by train in the UK..Bling it or wing it?

by budapest8

Travel by train in the UK is no longer a simple affair and after an abcense of3 years from the old country I was truly a beginner, bacl almost at square one.For example without advance planning a single rail trip can vary in price as muchas a hundred pounds sterling if you leave your journey preparation to the last minuteand have to pay at the moment of travel. There are now some very IMPORTANT new rules if you wish to get the best price.1) Plan your journey well in advance, 1 month or more if possible.2) travel after peak hours after 9.30 am3) search online or ask at railway station to search for the cheapest ticket.4) be flexible with travel times 5) There are many types of rail cards that offer great discounts, For Example Family Rail Card cost 26 pounds for a year but 2 adults and 3 children can use it.66% off childrens fare and 33% of adult fares. Price example is for the single...

Heathrow - what a pleasant surprise!

by christine.j

In the past I was not too fond of Heathrow airport, as I found it confusing and everything took much longer than in any other airport. But this time I was pleasantly surprised.I arrived in terminal 1, walked to immigration: There were long lines, but several counters were manned and the whole thing took just a few minutes. Great!I then walked to the baggage claim, didn't have to wait long and was out of Heathrow within half an hour.On my way back, I had planned an extra hour - from experience - , but again checking in was so fast and easy - enough machines and enough counters for the baggage drop - the security check was very quick, the gate was announced in time - it was great! This was in August 2009, main holiday season and many, many passengers - what a change from the last times I flew from Heathrow. Wonderful!

Eurostar Website - cheaper buying in Pounds

by jmackey

Want to buy a ticket on the Eurostar via their website? Make sure you check the costs on their website in different currencies. I found the Euro cost was significantly more than the same journey in Pounds.http://www.eurostar.com/dynamic/booking.search?lang=UK&country=UK

Double Deckers, London

by hopang

London double deckers are the most convenient and inexpensive way to travel and see the city of London from the top of the bus - certainly better and more enjoyable than travel by London Underground. The red double deckers which dominate the streets of London are also regarded as tourist attractions by many foreign tourists! As for the locals they are just another means of transportation! Most of the London double deckers are approximately 10 meters long and approximately four meters high with excellent view from the upper deck. Some old model double deckers known as Routemaster introduced in the middle of the 20th century are still in operation in the streets of London. The London double deckers are owned and operated by Transport for London (TfL) which also owns and operates London Underground.

London Underground

by hopang

London Underground is a mass rapid transit system in Greater London and its neighbourhoods such as Essex and Buckinghamshire. It is also known as the Tube due to the tube shape of its tunnels. It was founded in 1863. Thus it is the oldest underground system in the world. London Underground is also one of the busiest underground systems in the world which handles approximately three millions passengers daily.London Underground has a total of 12 lines with approximately 275 metro stations. The total length of track is approximately 400 kilometers which makes it the longest undeground system in the world. Nevertheless approximately 55% of its total network is above ground. London Underground is owned and operated by Transport for London (TfL). Operating hours are between 5.00 a.m. and 1.00 a.m. daily. Train travel

by SallyM

See http://www.nationalrail.co.uk for times and fares for all train companies in the UK. You can also book tickets on this site. The fare structure has recently been 'simplified' so that there are now only 3 types of ticket:Anytime: where you just turn up at the station at any time and buy a ticket for the next train. These are the most expensive.Off-peak: Cheaper tickets for less busy trains (i.e not rush-hour) - you can just turn up and buy these at the station on the day of travel, but your choice of trains will be more restricted.Advance: single (one-way) tickets offering cheaper fares on many longer distance journeys. You must book in advance and travel on a specific train service.Unless travelling from a small rural station without a ticket office, always make sure you have a ticket before getting on the train, or you may be charged a penalty fare.Note also that the charge for use...

National Express - worst service ever!

by Quartzy

National Express is, it seems, the biggest coach service provider around the UK. According to its website, it actually covers all Europe or so. But don't be fooled. National Express only covers the UK - other providers are taking care of the other regions. So when their website tells you that a 28-days pass allows you to get on any National Express coach, they're lying. Because when you check whether they go to Ireland, and the website tells you they do, what it's not telling is that the bus that actually goes there is an Ulsterbus service. So you can't use your pass. Actually, even if you're trying to get to Northern Ireland, which, last time I checked, was in the UK, you won't be able to use your pass EVEN THOUGH you're buying the ticket in an National Express office.Plus, you can only get on a coach that's not fully booked. We knew that, but it's only after trying to get on two...

Travel by road

by uglyscot

Britain is quite well covered by major highways, called motorways usually designated by M and a number- M1 , M4, etc. Other large roads are designated with A5, A245 etc, while less important minor roads are B 165 etc.Travellers on Motorways should always make sure they have full tanks as service stations on some routes may be quite far apart. The same goes for toilet facilities and cafes. I remember one trip from Scotland to Wales via Norwich and London, when we got lost somewhere near Lincoln/Norfolk area. We drove for hours unable to find anywhere to relieve our bladders or refill our stomachs because it was getting very late, around midnight. Most service areas have fuel and some even have accommodation. Restaurants and restrooms [toilets] and some shops are also to be found .

UK Rail Travel

by Wowmoment

Travel by rail in the UK can be very expensive but there are bargains and offers to be had. The system is rather complex and hard to understand, even for those of us who live here! This is the place to start http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/en/pj/jpHave some specifics in mind eg date, destination. But I have found that being flexible with times can save money. Britain is not a dangerous place, so arriving early or late is not a problem. Just check out that transport from the station will be available at your arrival time. June 2008 - there are a lot of closures on the rail network due to maintenance work, well worth checking before you travel.
