Advice for trip around the UK

by Wowmoment

The cost of trains and buses can vary hugely, by working out an itinerary and spending some time on these two sites you could work out a good trip. Being flexible is the best way to get the best deals and if your priority is price something may have to give on the itinerary. I always thinks that it's impossible to see EVERYTHING, as long as you enjoy what you see.http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/en/pj/jphttp://www.transportdirect.info/Web2/?abandon=trueDon't forget air travel can be cheap - these two are good.http://www.easyjet.com/EN/Book/http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/Car is a very flexible option but bear in mind two important points. Fuel is very expensive here £1.08 per litre and seemingly rising all the time. Also distances on a map are very deceiving, Motorways and main roads are quick but traffic can be truly awful on any minor road adding hours to a journey. The best bet is the most...

By Air around the UK

by Wowmoment

Air travel can be a real bargain between major cities. It is worth watching the sites to see prices over a period. I have no idea why but they tend to move up and down!If you are a bit flexible on day & time, you will see great variations. There are some great bargains to be had.

UK Coach Travel

by Wowmoment

Often disregarded, coach travel in the UK can be very good and offer a very competitive alternative to train and plane. Its worth taking the time to explore all the options as there are bargains to be had!

TCV train tickets for UK are better than railpass!

by GyuriFT

British round-trip open train tickets bought in continental Europe cost pretty reasonable.Suggestion: get a RAIL+ in continental Europe for further 25% discount and buy your tickets there. It's a bit more planing than with the Britrail - but the price difference is huge. Best are the hand-written tickets issued in "East" Europe, the RAIL+ card there is also the cheapest (25 Euro/year)See here why is that:http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/b883d/f4/7/I can calculate (or anyone, if they know how to use www.jizdenka.cz web site) the UK TCV fares. Best are the round-trip prices. These TCV tickets are not simple "point-to-point" but like railpasses: you have 60 railway-days in 60 days and no limitation how many times you change the trains.

Motoring costs.

by mwe

If you drive in Britain, petrol is higher octane than American gasoline. Most cars run on 95 octane unleaded at roughly £1 a litre/ £4.54 per imperial gallon (as at November, 2007). This equals US$8 per US gallon. A couple of higher grades are available:98 octane "Super Unleaded". Some retailers do a super-high 101 octane. Some cars and most commercial vehicles use Diesel fuel (DERV), typically about £1.03 per litre.Diesel is especially popular with medium and larger cars, from Vauxhall Astra-sized, through Toyota Avensis, Jaguar X-types and larger 4x4s, such as Land Rover Discovery and Range Rover.Car rental usually covers the following types of vehicle (American equivalents in brackets).Supermini (subcompact) Nissan Micra (Chevrolet Aveo).Medium (compact) Vauxhall Astra (Chevrolet Cobalt).Large (mid-size) Jaguar X-type (Lincoln Zephyr).Specialised car rental, such as chauffeur-driven...

British Airways? Lufthansa? RyanAir?

by christine.j

From Germany there are many ways to get to the UK, flying is certainly the fastest one. Judging from my trips, budget airlines are not always the best way. It really depends where you're going to. I live less than one hour away from Frankfurt airport and about one and a half hours from Hahn.Flying to LONDON, I found out that British Airways or Lufthansa are better than RyanAir, all things considered. If you book early enough, you can get good fares on the regular airlines, Lufthansa even offers a sort of last minute special for 99 Euro round trip. Sign up to their newsletter to receive it.BA or Lufthansa bring you to Heathrow and you can take the tube into the centre of London. Stansted Airport is a longer distance from London, so it's a train first and then the tube.At first glance, RyanAir may look cheaper, but after you've added all the taxes , fees for checking in and luggage, the...

Luton Airport

by graeme83

Luton Airport is the home of Easyjet and mainly used by cheap lowfare airlines for European routes. The easiest route in to London is via the train. Times to the centre of London (Kings Cross are approx 40mins). The cheapest method of transport is by coach. See easybus for the cheapest fares.Parking :The cheapest and best place to park for the airport is at Luton Parkway Railway Station. There is a free bus from here to the airport that takes just 10mins, departing every 15mins. The car park here is safe, secure and cheaper than all short/medium/long term parking places advertised on the internet (airparks, purple parking etc). Cost £4 per day.

Virgin Trains

by clivedinburgh

Virgin has been much criticised over the years for its train service but it now seems to be fulfilling the early promises made by Mr Branson. All new rolling stock combined with the West Coast line upgrade has meant that travel has been made faster and more comfortable.I have been using Virgin for a few months and bargains can be had, even when booking 3 days in advance. Time & moneywise the journey I usually take (Edinburgh to Watford) is just as quick & cheap on the train as it is to fly and the comfort factor is far greater.Once you arrive at a station then the traintaxi website will provide you with local cab companies.

Tour group travelling

by Carmanah

We travelled throughout the UK by our lovely tour bus. Bus, coach, whatever you want to call it. For us, we really had no choice in terms of transportation as everything was already pre-arranged for us. One of the funniest moments was during the long drive from York to Edinburgh, a friend of mine put her Adam Sandler cassette (this is early 1996 - we were still listening to cassettes) in the bus soundsystem. For a good hour we were listening to really hilarious, if not downright rude, comedy.

Speeds

by smirnofforiginal

Obviously we drive on the correct side of the road, with priority and overtaking to our right!!!In town, speed limits are 30mph and our motorways have our national speed limits of 70mph. All other roads you should look for speed signs and NEVER assume the speed because we have speed cameras and police everywhere - speed is a big money maker! Some motorways have "variable" speeds, such as M25 and you will be advised by big, overhead, displays - some cameras are adaptable to the variable displays and you'll notice a difference in the traffics speed - drivers tend to know the "hot spots"!
