Cheap trainsportation

by tvor

In recent years, a new bus (coach) service between major cities has appeared. Megabus. It offered online-only booking with trips between major centers for as little as a pound per person per one way journey up to about 3 pounds. There's a 50p booking fee per person as well. There are a few other coach services that have sprung up in other regions as well and the National Express, the national coach service has had to offer reduced rates in order to compete. The Megabusses are double decker and run several times a day and are more or less express busses, with only a rest stop or a stop at major city centres. The Megabus from Glasgow to London stops in Manchester, for instance. You book online and print off the receipt with the booking number or you can get it sent to your mobile phone as a text but remember to save it. You show the booking number to the driver when you board. I've taken...

Busses and Trains

by tvor

Renting a car is going to be pricey because the cost of the gas/petrol is not cheap. If you feel adventurous, get a BritRail train pass. There are lots of options and types and prices and you can get first class and regular coach. You can also get around by bus which may service areas that don't have train stations. Bus is often cheaper too but takes a bit longer sometimes. If you don't go for the rail pass, you can buy tickets for both bus or train online and pick them up at the station and terminals. If you get them in advance more than 7 days you will probably get a better price as well. It might even be cheaper to do that then buying a rail pass if you know where you want to go and when. Rail passes have to be bought outside the country so see your local travel agent of go online. Rail Passes

by christine.j

A very good way to save money are the rail passes and the point-to-point tickets which you can buy from outside the UK. I've done it very often through BritRail. They send the ticket to you, I usually got it within two or three days.Even with a fee of 5 Euro the tickets are still a lot cheaper than buying them at the train station in the UK.There is a cheaper rate available for young people, 25% off the regular price for people up to 25.

National Express

by christine.j

Since I don't like renting a car when I'm going on my own I've taken the National Express coaches a lot. They take longer than the train but they can take you to places without a rail station. They are also cheaper. A return ticket is just a bit more than a single. I've also booked an open jaw ticket a few times and found it a very good way to save money. This option is now hidden in the FAQ section, it used to be on the home page.Just a word of caution, however: Don't plan your schedule too tight, the coaches are never on time. If you have to make a connection, allow for at least one hour in between.Once a coach broke down completely, which caused a delay of almost two hours, while we were waiting for a substitute coach.

FlyBE

by clivedinburgh

FlyBE is the new name for British European and these have taken on most of BAs old internal routes (e.g. Bristol to Edinburgh). The fares are low if booked in advance and you avoid the peak times and they regularly have deals on flight and hotel combos.

Easyjet

by clivedinburgh

Easyjet was the first of Stelios' companies and the fact it is still expanding shows that people are willing to travel with no frills if the price is right. There is no pre-booking of seats and you are boarded by group (e.g. A-H), even then it can be a bit of a scrum. That said it doesn't claim to have any airs and graces so I'd recommend it for London to Scotland/NI journeys.

British Airways

by clivedinburgh

BA has withdrawn from several routes over the last few years but remains the quality carrier throughout the UK. Deals are available as part of regular 'sales' but they are still more expensive than the no frills carriers.

Brit Xplorer - coach discount pass

by milugares

If you are non-UK, you can buy a BritXplorer discount pass to travel by coach around Great Britain (not Northern Ireland). The pass is valid for 7, 14 or 28 consecutive days and can be bought online or also in offices in the UK.Prices (2005) - see website:79 GBP, 139 GBP, 219 GBP.Another cheap way to travel is funfares: e-tickets offers only sold online at: http://www.nationalexpress.com/save/funfares.cfm En Español: El autobús sale más barato que el tren en Gran Bretaña.
