United kingdom is an island so if you want to come to the island you can buy a ticket and land in many airports. We came from Israel to London's Heathrow airport and from there to Edinburgh's Airport.
The one thing that bothered me when planning my trip was how I was going to manage train travel. Piece of cake...even with three pieces of luggage! Tickets are easy enough to buy...mostly at train stations. Just know what platform you need to be on. If you aren't sure, ask anyone who looks like they work there! Each carriage has a storage area for luggage. Just keep an eye on it at each stop! There are always spare seats and you don't have to sit at your designated one. I always tried to sit as close to my luggage as possible. When booking your journey try to get a route that gives you time to change trains if you have to. Once again just ask someone where the next platform is and head straight for it.Sometimes you have to use lifts to get over to the other side. Can be a bit confusing the first or even maybe the fourth time but you'll get there. My theory was to always ask someone when in...

Many folk are 'scared' of driving in the UK and Ireland, what with the narrower roads and walls that lean over to touch you and so on, but I say go for it!Travel by train or bus and you'll miss a LOT of stuff going from A to B. You'll also have to haul your luggage in places you'd rather not, plus all the waiting. In your own vehicle it's door to door, and you can explore the myriad of lanes at your leisure, finding unique pubs for lunch or dinner. If you won't drive yourself there are pro drivers and small groups you can hook up to, and I'm sure some can be found here on VT.
If you're planning to fly from elsewhere in Europe, check out the budget airlines. Easyjet and Ryanair all fly to/from Stansted (just north of London), and Easyjet also flies to/from Luton (NW of London) and Liverpool. All of these airlines can be booked on the web - click on these links: Easyjet, or Ryanair. For more information about Stansted airport, visit the BAA Stansted website, and for Luton Airport, check out, www.london-luton.com. If you're coming from further afield, you're more likely to land at Heathrow or Gatwick, although there are an increasing number of flights to regional airports, especially Manchester (handy for exploring the north of England). Try these links for BAA Heathrow, BAA Gatwick and Manchester Airport.Non-budget airlines based in the UK include British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and British Midland. Note that BA and British Midland often have deals that can...
There's an increasing number of ways to get around the UK - in particular there are several airlines competing well against the trains on longer routes - for example it's possible to fly London to Blackpool on Ryanair. While the trains certainly have their problems, they can still be a fast and comfortable option. You can check out train times at the National Rail site. The cheapest way around the UK, though is generally by bus - you can even book online at www.nationalexpress.com. For information on getting around London, the best place to start is probably the Transport for London website.
British rail is one of the biggest and developed in the world, however, I am not sure how efficient it is, I used it only couple of times and so far, beside the high prices it has been all right for me.

My wife and I were left stranded in Edinburgh on 31st December, when our bus failed to show up. We had paid in advance but this did not help us when left in the city at night, when all other buses and trains had stopped. With the following day being New Year, with all transport closed, and with all hotels full (Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh are massive), we were stuck. Finally, we were forced to pay double fare for a taxi all the way to Perth. This cost £90.We "welcomed in the New Year" in the back of a taxi, and were left broke.Megabus is run by Stagecoach. I have yet to receive an apology, let alone compensation. The moral is, like other budget transport - Megabus cannot be relied upon.

This was my first trip by rail around the U.K. It was great! HOWEVER, many of the train doors do not open by themselves. I missed my stop in Diss, & ended up in Norwich. I just stood there like an idiot waiting for the door to open! The trick is to roll down the window, reach around outside & grab the handle. Norwich was a pleasant diversion however. A quick pint at The Complete Angler Pub, & I was off back to Diss.

Train fares are ridiculously expensive in the UK - especially if you don't book your ticket a couple of months in advance. Coach is the cheaper option (although usually much slower), National Express being the main company. However, there is a really cheap way to get around - Megabus.com, most tickets (if you book a few days in advance) are only £1. You can even get from London to Scotland for a quid!
