by dr.firas

Flagging down a bus.

by bthon

This sounds like an insignificant tip, BUT when traveling by city bus throughout london, you have to wave it down like a taxi. You can only do this at an actual bus stop, but just waiting there is not enough, as many times they will continue past you. Also some routes such as the 25 towards east london are generally overcrowded at which point the bus will not stop to pick up more passengers. Finally, just because the bus schedule says one should be arriving, doesnt mean one will come anytime soon, as clumps of buses sometimes run together meaning the entire hour's worth just passed. Still its a whole lot cheaper than the tube and you get a great view of the city!

I have used both trains and...

by hayward68

I have used both trains and private car to tour the UK. Hiring a car is best way to see all the little villages and back roads. Just remember to drive on the left and use the passing places on one lane roads. One of you will have to tuck your car into the space carved out of the side of the road so you can pass each other, you may even have to back up if you're closer to one. Be careful flying around corners on those narrow roads, you never know when a car is coming in the opposite direction, those hedgerows tend to block the view of road.I used a BritRail pass on a couple of visits and found them excellent. Especially if you're planning on taking long train trips. One three week trip I took had me all over the UK, from Penzance in Cornwall up to west coast of Scotland and south coast of England. The pass paid for itself after a couple of trips. Another website to check for trains is...

MIND THE GAP

by pinay_ako

When learning about the intricacies of local transport, what works for me is purchasing a multi-trip/multi-day pass which allows me to get on and off wherever, however many times for a given period. This also saves me a bit of hassle for WHEN, not IF, I get lost. All part of the adventure of exploring!

If you like sailing…

by diamond7

…and if you are in England, and want to visit Spain or Portugal, then you have a ferry between Portsmouth and Bilbao (north of Spain). You can take a ferry (a very good boat of P&O) that takes you directly to Bilbao, departing from Portsmouth. This way you can enjoy a sailing of about 30 hours. The ferry is the “Pride of Bilbao” but this boat sounds more like a cruise than a ferry ! . The ferry leaves Portsmouth in: Tuesdays and Saturdays, at 20:00; and leaves Bilbao in: Mondays and Thursdays, at 12:30

Eurostar

by mabu

If you are travelling by train from the continent, the best is to use the Eurostar trains from Paris or Brussels to London. Paris to London takes only 2 1/2 hours wich is much quicker then any plane (City Centre - City Centre)The Trains have got first and second class. both are comfortable. In the first class you get a meal or snack served (depending on the time of the day) and of course you've got more room. In second class you can get food from the trolley or in one of the two buffet cars. You need to book the ticket in advance if you want to get one of the discount fares. You will get cheaper fares if you book a return ticket..Before you board the train you need to go through a security check similar to the one at the airport. So you need to get to the station 30 minutes before departure of the train.

Taxis, cabs, mini-cabs.

by leics

Most people know about the famous black cabs of London, but what about the rest of the UK? There are black cabs in some other large towns, but you'll mainly find taxis whixh are ordinary saloon cars, licensed by the local authority (there will be a license plate near the number plate). You can't hail these taxis, though you will often find a 'rank' (a place where they wait for custom) near the local station. Otherwise, you will have to phone them up.The travel rates are set by the local authority too. There will be a meter on the dashboard.....check that it is switched on before you move off. Also check that you have enough money to pay the driver ..... you can ask how much the journey will cost before you start. Expect to pay more after midnight.Don't get into a taxi which does not have license plates .....there are a few which will try to rip you off.Tipping the driver is your choice....

Anything goes!

by Sjalen

By plane to big hubs like Londons Heathrow/Gatwick or Stanstead, Manchester, Glasgow...the list is almost endless. By ferry from several places in France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, Scandinavia...By Eurostar train from Brussels or Paris. Eurolines coaches from most European cities. National Express and other coach liners are the slowest but cheapest. Trainfares can be confusing to figure out but trains go almost everywhere.

London cab

by sugarpuff

Although by far the most expensive way to get around the capital, upon arriving in this incredible city, you really HAVE to take one of these taxis! The more traditional ones are of course the black ones, but I found this one amusing as it reminded me of home!Dont take a long ride in it as the fare will quickly add up!
