    HMS Tenby (01)

    by grayfo Written May 2, 2014

    (J 34) - Bangor-class Minesweeper

    Two ships of the Royal Navy have borne the name HMS Tenby, the first was a Bangor Class Minesweeper (656 tons) and was ordered in July 1939 and built by Hamilton White of Glasgow; the ship was laid down in September 1939 and launched in September 1941. The ship distinguished herself in the Dieppe and D-Day Landings and subsequently in post-war operations off the coast of Norway. HMS Tenby also set a world record for one continuous sweep, which was in excess of 72 hours off the Norwegian coast. The ship was finally sold in January 1948 and broken up.

    Tenby Lifeboat Station

    by Myfanwe Updated Oct 25, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Tenby was granted a new lifeboat station some time ago, this was constructed right next to the old one which was first established in 1852 and is a Grade II listed building so could not be demolished. As luck would have it a lucrative businessman and his Wife from Cardiff bought the old lifeboat station which would otherwise have gotten into a state of disrepair and crumbled into the sea. They decided to create a swanky, rather unique holiday home with views like no other & their very own slipway to house their speedboat. The regeneration of the lifeboat station was showcased on the Channel 4 television programme 'Grand Designs'. They followed the project step by step as the delapidated building was rescued and transformed into a great living space. You can read more about it here.

    Welsh language

    by HORSCHECK Updated Jun 7, 2005

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    About a quarter of the Welsh population still speak the ancient Celtic language Welsh, which is not an English dialect. To promote the Welsh language, most roadsigns are bilingual in Wales: English and Welsh.
    When visiting a foreign country, it is always nice and helpful to speak at least a few words in the local language. So here are a few useful phrases in Welsh:

    Cymru = Wales
    Shw mae = Hello
    Bore da = Good morning
    Dydd da = Good day
    Hwyl = Bye
    Diolch = Thanks

    British Pubs

    by HORSCHECK Updated Jun 7, 2005

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    For many locals the pubs are their second home and a perfect place for conversation. British Pubs usually don't have a waiter service. You have to go to the bar to buy your drinks and to pay immediately after your order. The beers for sale are either on draught (on tap), in bottles or cans. Famous types of british Beer are: Ale, Mild, Bitter and Stout.

    Fish and Chips

    by HORSCHECK Written Feb 7, 2004

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Britain's most popular hot take away meal is Fish and Chips. This tasty combination is usually eaten with salt and vinegar; in Scotland sometimes with a special brown sauce. The most popular fish is Cod, followed by Haddock and Plaice. Prices are about 1 GBP for the chips and about 2,50 GBP for the fish.
