St Illtyd Llanhilleth,Western Valley, Gwent

by nightcowboy

The coming of Christianity to Gwent, around the Third Century CE, its noted that British-Celtic-churches were present at the Councils of Arles and Rimini in 314 & 359 .It's said that the first preacher to have spoke in Llanhilleth to have been no other then St Paul, in the absence of any credible source, be relegated to myth status. For it was in 860-893 that a cell of sorts was established on or near the site of St Illtyd. This falls behind the first mound of the Castell Taliorum Siluriam hill fort complex; and the circular churchyard tells of earlier pagan worship. I put more on my Gwent Page. For you that travel here a inn is right be-side this church.

Sixbells Statue

by nightcowboy

The deaths of 45 men killed 50 years ago in a pit explosion on the 28 th june 1960. The fact is that the industrial revolution was fired by Welsh steam coal and the British Empire was built using coal. Artist Sebastian Boyesen wanted to create something that the poeple of sixbells would relate to and not a abstract piece. Having visited the site what with the statue on top of the colliery where the men died down in the valley bottom, I felt in would have been much more of a statement if put on the side of the steep valley over looking the colliery. They say its taller then the angel of the north?.
