We are lucky to have our own car, so getting from London to Wales was very simple. We drove up via Bristol and crossed the fabulous Severn Bridge.
We found driving around Wales very easy. Roads were well sign posted and other drivers courteous - though the pace was a little slower than London!!
You can also get to Tintern Abbey by bus. Stagecoach Buses run regular services from Chepstow and Monmouth, which stop right in front of the Abbey.
Tintern is a few miles north of Chepstow, following the A466 road which passes Chepstow Racecourse and then follows the River Wye quite closely, heading for Monmouth. Chepstow is easy to reach by car, being only a couple of miles from the M4 motorway.
By public transport, the nearest railway station is Chepstow. Tintern is served by the Number 69 bus (currently operated by Town & Country Bus) which rattles and screeches its way from Chepstow Bus Station, past Chepstow Racecourse, Tintern and eventually to Monmouth. It leaves only once every two hours, so it helps if you can coordinate your train journey with the bus timetable (the bus station is a brisk 10 minute walk from the train station). A return bus ticket from Chepstow to Tintern is £4 for an adult (2011). There is a bus stop on the main A466 road in front of Tintern Abbey and then every 300m or so through Tintern village.
