Dare Valley Country Park is a great, accessible way for you to enjoy the countryside. The area has been landscaped on reclaimed mine fields. In 1971, the redundant coal tips were removed, the River Dare was re-routed and two lakes were created. The Country Park was opened in 1973. It is situated about 2 miles North of Aberdare town Centre. The Visitor centre has a great cafe which serves home cooked meals, cakes and drinks. There are some great colour coded walking trails for you to follow. A firm favourite is a walk up the country lane towards the lake. We continued a little further following the red circular route. This is a fairly accsessible and mostly flat route although walking along the narrow gravel path was challenging at times with a pushchair!! Saying that it is a lovely walk and follows the stream up towards the woods. We deviated slightly off the path on the way back and followed the road by the cottages back down towards the lake. If you want to take one of the longer routes into the wooded area you may catch a glimpse of some Peregrine Falcons swirling around the craggy edges of the rock face above you.
The Country Park offers some great courses such as Coracle making, Archery and Cycling tours. During the summer there is also a line up of free concerts in the Courtyard behind the Visitor Centre. There is also a horse riding centre nearby.
The Country Park offers a variety of accomodation options - see separate accomodation tip.
There is free car parking at the Visitor Centre.Related to:
