 | Porthcawl Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 15 | | Just 2 miles away from Porthcawl you'll find the charming village of Newton with it's 12th Century church and pubs set around the village green - an idyllic way to spend a sunny afternoon. If you follow the road down past the church you will reach a car park where you will find the much quieter beach of Newton, you won't find any amusement arcades or cafe's here but it is full of natural beauty adjoining you'll find the sand dunes of Merthyr Mawr & on the beach itself the rock pools are great for the kids. There is a car park here & if you're willing to walk along the beach towards the dunes you will have the beach to yourself! Address: Follow the signs to Trecco bay & then to NewtonDirections: Follow the road past the entrance to Trecco bay caravan park, bear left at the ancient briton pub/stop there for a swift half. The beach car park is at the bottom of the hill to the left.

Surfing is an extremely popular past-time in Porthcawl. Rest Bay is the main surfing beach and also Sandy Bay for the increasingly popular sport of Kite surfing. There is ample car parking here overlooking the bay, it's just a short downhill walk to the beach. Address: Rest BayDirections: Follow the road round from the promenade, past the seabank hotel, up the hill & follow the sign to the left.

Locks common is an area which provides great walks along the rugged coastline inbetween the promenade and the surfing beach of Rest Bay, the fairly flat terrain is home to many species of wild flowers & birds and is well used especially on a Sunday afternoon. On a clear day as you are walking along there are nice views of Swansea bay in the distance. The paths are not really suitable for pushchairs in some areas & I would advise sensible footwear. Address: Locks CommonDirections: Walk to the end of the promenade, then to the right of the white shelter where you will find an information board.

When the wind is high and the sea choppy, take a stroll to the end of the promenade to watch the waves crashing over the sea wall at high tide. It is a great attraction for those who want to experience the forces of nature first hand, it can be a bit windy though - I've seen people in a car drive on the promenade to get a better view of the waves. Address: Seafront PorthcawlDirections: Promenade, infront of the lifeboat station.

It may not be the warmest time of the year, but organisers of Porthcawl's Christmas morning swim say they are still expecting a record turnout. 'The good news for swimmers is that the tide is in, so not so far to run and spectators will have a great view,' said committee secretary Stan Howells. 'We have requested bright sunshine so, looking positively, it could be warmer in the sea than standing by watching.' Last year's 40th anniversary event attracted 400 entrants and more than 3,000 spectators to Coney Beach. To date, £41,000 has been raised for local charities through sponsorship of the swimmers and collections from spectators. This year's event is set to start with carol singing at the Hi Tide Inn at the top of the beach at 11am, where swimmers will also be able to register. Coastguards will signal the start of the swim at 11.45am by firing a single maroon. And in case Jack Frost gets the better of anyone, Rest Bay Lifeguards will be on stand-by, as will the Porthcawl lifeboat. Leave a Comment

Hi-Tide arcade and bar with public house and reasonable meals with 2 for 1 specials. Recently, a new bar has been built with a seating area of the promenade next to the sea. Lovely views of the sea and clean food. Leave a Comment Phone: 01656 782432

The Oakwood pleasure park is a great day out, the main gates to the train ride to the park and the seperate sections of rides and shops. It is highly recommended for all ages and you have to visit the mini golf and the arcades to get the most out of the trip. Leave a Comment

Going down to coney beach fun fair for a day out... Good rates available in book buys of tickets and on special wed and friday nights where some rides are half price at certain times. The front shops along the prom have had a recent lick of paint and new dodgems and beach party are some of the favorites. Personally, I prever the funfair feel to trecco bay. And have always had a soft spot for the fun of the fair. Leave a Comment

Not strictly in Porthcawl but not very far away is the stunning Sker Beach, accessed via a 20 minute walk through the beautiful Kenfig Nature Reserve. For surfers, Sker has similar waves to the much busier and v. popular Rest Bay in Porthcawl itself, but is much quieter. Leave a Comment Address: Sker BeachDirections: From Nottage, take West Road and follow until you reach Kenfig Nature Reserve on your left. The visitor centre will be able to give you a map for the beach.
