A drive around it, going at an average speed of 40 m/p/hr... would take you around 30 mins to do. We stopped and started along the way, so that is a bit of a thumb suck... lol... but it really is a super lake, where people kayak and do other water sports hike, cycle, fly fish, have picnics and there's a lovely array of birdlife here too.
This gorgeous lake is a 10-15 minute drive from Llanfyllin. It has the most impressive sluice system!
Lake Vyrnwy is man-made, and was finally completed in 1888. Llanwddyn village was submerged by the lake then, and when the weather is really hot, there's little rain, and the water level drops, the ruins of the old village reappear! Wow, I would LOVE to see that! Not too sure how often this happens though.
We got out of the car quite a bit as there are such interesting things to see as you venture round it. I happened upon a lovely shop with beads and crafty bits and pieces, so was in my element :)
This little stream is the stream we had at the bottom of the garden where we were staying. Gorgeous, but far too small for any fishing! haha
My husband really loves fly fishing. He has been doing it for many years, and even makes his own flies. I genuinely cannot tell the difference between the flies he makes and bought ones.
If you feel like fishing, the best bet is to leave Llanfyllin, following Lake Vyrnwy signs, and as you go along to the lake, you wil notice at least 3 other small signs nailed to trees, where you can go and fly fish. You can rent all you need to rent from these places, or have your own gear.
And for wives who are on the banks and not participating, take along a good book! :)
