    a thatched cottage

Favorite thing: On the road between Barry and Llanwit Major, near Dryffadd, are some lovely thatched cottages. I'd never thought of thatched cottages as being associated with Wales, for some unknown reason. I wanted to photograph them but the roads are so narrow and winding that it was almost impossible to find somewhere to park.
Here are just three I managed to capture.

    History of Barry

    Map of Barry 1760

Favorite thing: Barry’s name originates from St. Baruc, who drowned in the Bristol Channel and was buried in 'Baruc's Island', now called Barry Island. The town’s early years were troubled, with constant Viking raids, and in 1087 raiders even used the town as their own base. After came the Normans who divided the lands into manors and parishes. Barry became a sub-parish of Penmark and by the 12th and 13th centuries it had grown into a village and port with its own watermill, church and castle. Fragments of the castle, dating back to the 13th century, can be seen on the hill above Romilly Park.

    Gavin and Stacey

Favorite thing: Gavin and Stacey is a television comedy about an Essex boy and a Welsh girl who fall in love and the storyline follows their long-distance relationship. The series (three in all and a Christmas special) presents key moments from their first meeting, meeting each other's families, becoming engaged, getting married, looking for a house, briefly splitting up, looking for new jobs, and trying to conceive. The comedy has helped to refocus Barry Island due to being the home of the female lead and the use of the area throughout the series, so much that Gavin and Stacey tours are run during the summer.
