Although Cardiff has its own international airport, I used direct flight from Zagreb to Heathrow so I needed some form of local transport between the airport and Cardiff. My first stop was Bristol, and both cities were connected with Heathrow airport by National Express coach service.
The coach service was smooth and efficient, taking 2 hours between LHR and Bristol and three hours between Cardiff and LHR airport. I booked this as an "open jaw return" which was cheaper than two single tickets - I paid 38 GBP (Feb 2007) for the return ticket. From Cardiff coaches depart from the central bus station which is in front of the central train station.

You can get to Cardiff by Air from most of Europe and the UK and even as far away as Canada. The airport is a good 30miniutes drive from the city centre, so taxis can be a little expensive I would recommend the express bus service x91 which operates half hourly and costs just £7.00 return. Or you could board the train which serves between the airport and the Cardiff central station and runs hourly and takes around 36minutes at accost of around £4.20 one way.

After my first plane flight from Cardiff International Airport at least I feel more qualified to say something about it.
Yes, Cardiff has an airport and an increasing number of airlines fly here. There are connections to Ireland, Scotland, England and North Wales. You can also get good flights to Amsterdam and 'down south' to the holiday destinations on the Mediterranean.
The airport is about 9 miles west from Cardiff and a couple of miles from the town of Barry. There is a regular hourly Airbus X91 from Cardiff to the airport (35 minutes) and, sometime in 2005, a new railway link is opening up. And a big carpark - they charge about 28 GBP for a weekend's parking.
The airport is an ugly mess, like most airports. If you are leaving Cardiff, there are nicer food outlets in the Departures area than upstairs.
If you are arriving from mainland Europe, get a window seat on the right side of the plane - tremendous views on a clear day of Somerset, the island of Flatholm, Cardiff, Penarth and the Glamorgan Heritage Coast!!

It is an airport that is growing fast, I guess the main reason, is that BMI has made this airport the second one of its fleet.
As Stace lived in Barry, I never had any problem as it is 10 minutes from there, but if you have to go to Cardiff, no problems.
There is a bus called Airbus X91 and another one service number 95, goes to Cardiff. Prices around 3 pounds one way or 5 the return.

I travelled from Manchester to Cardiff by train, British Rail. It's a good alternative, British trains are very comfortable... If you are coming from London I advice you to do it by train too, it's a two-hours journey...
To move around we did not even need a map! This was great, when we got to Cardiff we went straight to the Information Centre and asked how to get to our Hotel...they let us know and we went...walking!!! It was a 5-minute walk from the train station...
You won't need a map, just go on walking and you will get to the place you want, there are lots of signs in the street, and the people are really eager to help you!!!

Rail is available into Cardiff, but driving is the best way to see the sites in Wales. There are too many hideaways to depend on rail or buses. Driving in Cardiff is pretty easy.

Airport - 20 mins taxi ride from centre..
Train - Central station right in centre..
Coach - Coach/Bus Station next to train station..
Car - J29 off M4, onto A48 towards city centre, where there's parking in 4 or 5 multi-storey car parks which all get pretty full after 10.30am at the weekend..
Walk round city centre - very compact. Taxis easy to find except at 2 am on a Friday or Saturday night!
