Roath Park, Cardiff
In the middle of the splendid Roath Park is a large tropical glasshouse. For a college project we had to choose a 'special place' in Cardiff, and Roath Park Conservatory was my 'special place'.
I guess it is about 10m by 30m in size. The greenhouse has been there for over 30 years and has a large pond, waterfall, 100's of mature tropical plants and some wildlife. During the week there are sometimes groups of schoolchildren being shown around. I occasionally go there to eat my sandwiches!
The pond has some massive koi carp, some weighing over 14kg. There are also some terrapins, a resident chicken and a Whistling Duck which.... erm... whistles!! Be warned the duck likes green shoes and trousers and may chase you if you are wearing this colour :-)
A unique, interesting place to visit. For its size it is not exactly cheap - £1.05 for adults and 55p for children and concessions.
And did I mention the Park? Roath Park has a large boating lake, flower gardens, a cafe and ice-cream vans. It is so important it is listed as 'Grade I' monument! So if its a nice day, maybe wander around the splendid park instead.
About 2 miles northeast of Cardiff city centre. Head for Albany Road, Wellfield Road, Ninian Road. You will need to cross under the Western By-pass, which nowadays divides the Park. Near the Youth Hostel. Buses 28, 29, 29B.
Roath Park is a classic Victorian park with a man made lake and leisure park in Heath, Cardiff. It was constructed in 1894, and is a great asset for the outskirts of Cardiff. The park has an area of 130 acres, the lake [30 acres] is a haven for waterbirds- swans are plentiful, even a black pair; we saw a coot with her 6 chicks, as well as mallard. Geese of different varieties stroll around the grass and paths too, and squirrels race across the grass.
Boats can be hired so a pleasant time can be spent pottering on the lake. There is a cafe where you can sit and watch all the active folk.
There is a lovely rose garden where you can sit and enjoy the summer smells- the cut grass, the roses.
A short stroll takes you to the conservatory with its collection of tropical plants- cacti, bamboo, banana plants, ferns and flowers. There is a 'waterfall' and a lake full of fish - large carp, goldfish- a myriad colours, as well as some turtles. It is not too hot nor humid. It would be a great place to sit and read a book- we paid 0.60 as OAPs.
There is also a large enclosed play area for children.
It's a great place to relax, and forget you are in a capital city.
Roath Park is my favorite park in Cardiff and one of my favorite parks in the world. It is extremely beautiful! A perfect place to go for a walk and just relax. It just got it all! A big lake housing a ton of swans and other birds such as geese. It has a large paved pedestrian path around the lake and under the trees - perfect for walking, running or rollerblading as I did several times when I lived in Cardiff. Fishing is possible as well (with the right license) or you can go rowing or take the boat tour. In the middle of the park you'll find a recreational area including a huge playground. In the opposite end from the lake you'll find lovely flowers gardens in the right season. That is also were you'll the big greenouse housing the Conservatory where you for a small fee can have a walk around the "jungle atmopshere" and see a lot of exotic plants and trees or feed the huge goldfish in the pond.
Standing in the middle of the park overlooking the lake - notice the welsh hills in the horizon over the treetops. I love this park!
To find the park in the northern end of Cardiff - look up the Roath area on a map
Roath Park is a hot-spot with us Cardiffians. Great all year round, but especially in the summer! Lovely recreational area, hearty lake and good childrens play area.
Take a trip on the Pride boat, row your own or take a nice realxing stroll.

Butiful Roath Park is located in the North of the city, has a very big lake. There are many swans, wild duck and birds live there. You can rent a boat during summer time or finishing. Also they have a good playing ground.
