    Classy place!

So it's 4am, you've had way too much to drink and you're staggering along St Mary's Street, and you really want something to eat. Not a bag of chips or a kebab but a proper meal, a big juicy steak. In which case you go to Charlestons…

Charlestons is a bit of a Cardiff institution, a real spit-n-sawdust place with a dark and dingy entrance and unlit winding staircase to the restaurant above. Inside it’s dimly candlelit, with wooden tables and a mixed clientele of drunken groups of guys and late-night couples on a romantic meal. The eccentric old Portuguese waiter has been here since... well by the looks of him I don't think he ever goes outside! They serve a range of steaks, chicken, fish and so on - not really the best place for vegetarians.

I have very good memories of nights here (of both drunken and romantic nights - see I know how to spoil a girl!), so it's a shame that the service is lousy, the food is mediocre, the wine list is good but the actual wine isn't so great, and to top it all off it's atrociously overpriced. But then where else can you get a steak at 5am in Cardiff? Nowhere.

If you're hungry a bit earlier the Taurus steakhouse is just round the corner, with similar prices but much better food. Unfortunately it's only open until about 2am and it's bright lights don't have quite the same intimate character of Charlestons. Now if you could just merge the Charlestons restaurant with the Taurus food...
