In the country? by M0B1US Look at the picture and you would be forgiven for thinking that you were in the middle of an idyllic country scene... Would you be surprised if I were to say that I was standing no more than about 200m from Cardiff Castle or that the city centre was a mere five minutes walk away...? Well it is true! On the left bank is Sophia Gardens and on the right bank is Bute Park in the centre of town. And it is absolutely great that you can walk along its banks in the middle of the city, as I frequently do. Although not a long river, its headwaters rising a mere 50 miles or so away in the Brecon Beacons, the Taff has long been the most important river in Wales especially in the last few hundred years when it helped provide a highway for Wales' burgeoning Industrial Revolution. Though by being so instrumental the Taff suffered such terrible pollution that it has only recently started returning to pristine condition, supporting a growing population of trout and salmon... As well as angling, the river is used for rowing and kayaking, with quite a number of rapids areas upstream. Did you know that the nickname of the Welsh is 'Taffy'? It is likely that it is derived from either the river or the Welsh name Dafydd(David), which is a popular Welsh name... Leave a Comment
