It has a stunning collection of international (and welsh) paintings, sculpture and ceramics. There are interactive displays of Welsh history, geology, flora and fauna (including dinosaurs!) which will keep the kids happy. All of this is FREE!! I go every now and then to stare in wonder at the wonderful paintings. They range from the C15th to the present day. Some of the galleries concentrate on Welsh themes. But there are many internationally important figures represented. They include the French Impressionists, such as Monet, Renoir, Pisarro and Rodin. There are also C20th greats, such as Auerbach and Hockney. My favorite work is the panoramic view of London, by the Russian Expressionist Oscar Kokoshka. There is also a pleasant cafe in the VAST main hall. And a restaurant, hidden further in the building. The museum staff are usually very knowledgable, and pleased to answer questions. The Museum is one of the impressive civic buildings around Cathays Park. Spend some time admiring the City Hall, Law Courts and University Building while you are there. The museum is open from every day except Monday, from 10am to 5pm. Check the website for details of visiting exhibitions. A series of white buildings grouped around Alexandra gardens north of the main shopping centre form Cardiff's Civic Centre. The formal buildings house the City Hall, Cardiff University and the Welsh National Museum, apparently one of the best museums in the UK. Thanks to the two wealthy Welsh sisters who donated their large art collection to the museum and gallery in the mid 20th century, the National Museum today owns one of the largest collections of Impressionist paintings outside of Paris. Amazingly, no one had the idea to make money out of this (yet), so the entry to the Museum is free. Parts of the museum are currently (2007) under reconstruction and some galleries are closed. Opened in 1927, the National Museum and Gallery is part of one of the finest collections of civic buildings in Europe. Its contents are unique amongst British Museums in its range of art and science displays, and while it is a long way from London, you would be wrong to think that its collection was in any way minor. These treasures mirror the cosmopolitan character of Cardiff from a time when the city was one of the world's richest cities, combining strong Welsh and international themes. For me the two most interesting parts of the museum are the impressive Evolution of Wales gallery that tells a global tale of creation and change from the perspective of Wales since the beginning of the Earth, and the spectacular gallery of Impressionist and Post Impressionist paintings by some of the most famous painters of the time... The Evolution of Wales gallery starts by setting the scene of how our planet works, the gallery shows the processes that have driven our planet throughout its 4600 million years of history. The Gallery charts the movement of the landmass that makes up Wales, starting in the Cambrian era over 500 million years ago when Wales was situated just 6 degrees from the South Pole, working right through the geological periods plotting Wales' progress across the Earth to where it is now. Many works of art by some of the world's pre-eminent painters hang in this gallery. These include works of art such as 'A Calm' by Van Chappelle, 'La Parisienne' by Renoir and 'Rain: Auvers' by Van Gogh. There are no less than six (!) paintings by Monet, as well as paintings by Cezanne, Pisarro, Manet, Sisley, Rubens, Bacon, Lowry, to name a fraction. The gallery is also well appointed with sculptures, most notably several by Rodin (including 'The Kiss') and one by Epstein. Other important exhibits include galleries on Ceramics, Minerals, Welsh Natural History, Man and the Environment, Archaeology and Numismatics. There is plenty to see here, and best of all - all of Wales' national museums are FREE! Leave a Comment

What an amazing place to learn, take the kids or just wander around all the exhibitions. I remember going there as a kid with school and with my parents on those rainy saturday's in the winter! Things have changed since then (for the better I must add) and you can easily spend a whole day or more looking around, trying the interactive exhibits out or taking a look at many of the art works on show. The Art Galleries provide magnificent settings for works by some of the world's most famous artists, including the Impressionists. The new Glanely Gallery is a hands-on interactive area with state of the art equipment to help you examine items from the Museum's collections that are normally hidden away, as well as hosting special events, workshops and talks. Shops, restaurant, visitor car park, baby changing facilities, cloakrooms Leave a Comment Phone: +44 (0)29 2039 7951Directions: Part of the Civic Centre Opening Hours - Free Admission to all 10.00am - 5.00pm Tuesday - Sunday. The National Museum of Wales is a museum and a gallery. It's one of the three famous civic buildings, domed and pillared and surrounded by gardens, in the city center. The buildings were constructed around the turn of the 20th century and made of white Portland stone. The museum has a natural history section, and an archaeology section as well as an extensive collection of Porcelain and china. There is a very good collection of Impressionist and Post Impressionist paintings, a nice group of Rodin statues and sculptures and the best of modern Welsh art. Leave a Comment Directions: The rightmost of the three civic buildings as you're facing them. Opens at 10, closed on Mondays.

Entry to the museum is free. The building itself is designed like so many I have seen with spacious ground floor, numerous side galleries and then an upper storey with galleries. When we were there , we spent most of our time at the ArteMondis exhibition which had been on for a month or so and was about to close. We also looked at some 18th century pottery and the evolution of Welsh civilization. There is a cafe on the ground floor. Photography was not allowed at the ArtrMondis exhibition for copyright reasons, but permittd for personal research elsewhere. Leave a Comment

This museum is in close proximity to the castle and can easily be including during a visit. Holds exhibits on Cultural, Natural and Political History. Frequently has special exhibits. There was one on Dinosaurs from China when I was there!
