    Car rental

I’m pretty sure it’s easy to rent a car at Cardiff airport, but as we stayed central and the airport is pretty outside we were looking for a car rental company close to the centre. That was a bit more difficult. The Avis station (which by the way is very small and easily can be overlooked behind the petrol station) is not far from the central railway station, but everything else seems to be farther away. We ended up renting a car with Hertz, as this was much cheaper for us. The Hertz station is in a industrial park in Grangetown, about 2 km from the railways station and centre. There’s one bus line that stops there, 92B, which only goes to Bessemer Road in the early morning and back in the late afternoon (see for the schedule). From the rental station, you are quickly on the A4232, which we found perfect. Except for the huge roundabout to get on the A4232, with 4 lanes or more and traffic lights in it, nothing I’m used to!

  • Cheap car parking tips

Travelling in Cardiff is quicker and cheaper by public transport, but if you absolutely have to drive here are some cheap parking tips:

On the weekends a park and ride service runs from County Hall car park opposite the Red Dragon Centre. This costs £3 per car and the bus journey is only about 10-15 mins (a far better option than the £8-10 a city centre multi-storey will cost)

Car Parking at the Red Dragon Centre can also be a good alternative. Park there all day and it will cost £9, however, if you pop in to the centre and buy something in the restaurants, bars, cinema or Doctor Who exhibition, and ask for your ticket to be validated, parking will be free.

A similar scheme operated in the Mary Ann Street multi-storey car park with Cineworld. Watch a film there after 6pm to get cheap parking.

It's a good idea to plan ahead too. If there is an event on at the Millennium Stadium parking will be very difficult and expensive. Public transport is always a better option.

Rent a car at Cardiff airport

We had lots of troubles to rent a car, as most of the rental cars companies close on weekends at the airport, strange isn’t it?

Finally we could book online a economy car (Fiat punto, nice and brand new) and returned at Sunday 5,00 am with Hertz.

    Get The Train From Newport

by cheekymarieh Written Mar 14, 2004

Before I went to the League Cup Final I was warned of the problems getting out of Cardiff on match days (and that previous week was only for a First Division).

That made us decide to park close to Newport railway station and catch a train for the 15 minute ride from there. It is worth noting that on a Sunday there is lots of free parking in the nearby streets.

We got into and out of Newport without suffering queues of traffic once we were on the motorway. In fact we were 2 hours drive away when we heard traffic reports of queues still on the motorway near Cardiff.

    Nice car

    by Carmela71 Updated Mar 15, 2004

And a great chouffer!! hahahaha ...

Well if he stills let me enter in his car, is because i did not shout enough, that he was driven in the wrong lane hehehehe.

To visit many countryside areas around Cardiff and drive through lanes, a jeep is the best.

Now this car is enjoying the sunny Spain.

    BY CAR....
Take the A470 north from Dolgellau and the Coed y Brenin forest park appears on the left after 5 miles or so.
