Brecon Beacons National Park

by lomi

Located in mid Wales, the Brecon Beacons National Park combines a mountain and moorland terrain dappled by ever-changing cloud shadows. This is a beautiful part of Wales, with traditional market towns, stunning landscapes, canal paths, castles and plenty of family attractions. The scenery here is diverse - rolling countryside and valleys, wide open spaces and wild beauty of the waterfalls and caves.

Royal Welsh Show

by lomi

It is the biggest agricultural show in Europe. More than 220,000 people attended the 2009 Show. It is always held at Builth Wells. In Victorian times, Builth Wells was a popular mid Wales spatown following the discovery of saline springs in the 1830s. The arrival of railways towards the end of the 19th century boosted thenumber of visitors and as a result many of the town’s original narrowstreets are lined with Victorian and Edwardian buildings. Now it is regarded as the centre for farming and agriculture in Wales, BuilthWells gained new importance as the permanent home of the RoyalWelsh Show. It is held on the opposite side of the river from the town. Builth Wells remains a popular touring centre and base for visitors.

National Botanic Garden

by misodiva

This place was amazing. A full day of beautiful gardens. The Gardens are large, but you can see it all in a day. You want a fairly non-rainy day which can be difficult. There are a few indoor areas, but you would miss a lot of the gardens. Also it was very worth it to walk to some of the more remote areas of the gardens. I liked the Waun Las National Nature Reserve that the Gardens have purchased to make a farmhouse exhibit in the future. Very relaxing walking by the natural gardens in the lakes area.I found lots to be in bloom and gorgeous wildflowers.

Caernarfon Castle

by Krumel

This definitely has to be one of the most impressive castles that I have visited. It is huge and very well preserved, so that you even explore a lot of the insides of it. Most other places you visit will have most staircases and upper floors blocked off, but here you can climb up to all the different floors, and even take a walk on top of the castle walls. Absolutely not to be missed when you're in the area!

Beaumaris Castle

by Balam

Building of the castle began in 1295 and was the last royal stronghold to be built by King Edward I in Wales completing the chain of fortifications 'The Iron Fist' with which he had begun to enclose Gwynedd in 1277.Following the death of of the prince of Wales Llywelyn in 1282 and his brother Dafydd less than a year later Welsh resistance to English rule effectively came to an end and Edward I had built or refurbished some 16 castles. Although a castle was planned for Beaumaris as early as 1283 it was not until the Welsh rebeled lead by Madog ap llywelyn that building began close to a thriving Welsh town called Llanfaes on Anglesey. The castle was built quickly and alongside it the new town of Beaumaris grew at the expense of Llanfaes whoes inhabitants were removed to a new settlement at the southwest tip of the Island. The Plan of the Castle took full advantage of it's position on a flat...

Segontium Roman Fort (Caernarfon)

by Balam

Segontium Roman Fort saw active service between AD77 and AD395, it was originally built in wood but was gradually rebuilt using stone from from around AD140. In it's heyday, garrisoned by the 20th Augustan Legion and surrounded by a shanty town which would have been inhabited by traders and and by the familys of the soldiers it would have represented an impressive urban complex in what would then have been a totaly rural part of the world. The on site museum offers some fine examples of roman coins and other items that have been found on site. The Museum and Fort are free to visitthey are open Tuesday to Sunday and on Bank Holiday Mondays.opening times are 12:30 to 16:30closed mondays
