    Megabus Fails To Show Up

  • Looks good but Megabus is unreliable! - United Kingdom
    Looks good but Megabus is
    unreliable!
    by scotlandscotour
My wife and I were left stranded in Edinburgh on 31st December, when our bus failed to show up.

We had paid in advance but this did not help us when left in the city at night, when all other buses and trains had stopped.

With the following day being New Year, with all transport closed, and with all hotels full (Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh are massive), we were stuck.

Finally, we were forced to pay double fare for a taxi all the way to Perth.

    This cost £90.

We "welcomed in the New Year" in the back of a taxi, and were left broke.

Megabus is run by Stagecoach. I have yet to receive an apology, let alone compensation.

The moral is, like other budget transport - Megabus cannot be relied upon.

If you're ever walking through Britain's countryside at night, you should be careful not to come across one of these guys. They mimic the great Buddha to come across as "peaceful" and "wise" but in fact they are just after your money. If you see one, make no sudden movements, keep eye contact with it, and slowly back away.

Speed cameras, box junctions and roundabouts.

  • Mini-roundabout - United Kingdom
    Mini-roundabout
    by leics
If you're driving, watch out for speed cameras! They look like metal boxes on posts, sometimes painted yellow. If you are breaking the speed limit a photo of your number plate is taken (you will see the flash) and there is an automatic fine....and it's not cheap! They are very unpopular but increasingly common.

If you see a yellow grid painted on the road at a junction follow this rule: do not enter the box until your exit is clear, even if the traffic lights are on green. The exception is if you wish to turn right, when you may enter and stay in the box until your path is clear.

There are many roundabouts in the UK, some tiny (mini-roundabouts) and some huge. The rule for all is simple: give way to the right before you enter the roundabout, keep moving when you're on it and keep signalling appropriately until you exit.

    Credit cards and ATM's

  • The one and only thing that went wrong for me was losing my credit card. Luckily I had a second one.
Rule number one...don't use any free standing machines at places like bus stations, airports etc, and in my case Tourist Information Centres!
The machine was faulty and the bank really could do nothing. Free standing machines are serviced by contractors so there isn't any chance of someone opening it up for you.
So always use a machine outside a bank that is OPEN!

Currency 2003 - Bring enough money with you.

  • All the countries in the Kingdom use the Pound Sterling. Whichever, country you are in (ie England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or Gibralter, it is still the Pound Sterling .For those of you from outside the European Common Market area, such as the States the euro zone must seem expensive and the UK even more so. Be warned to bring enough money with you, even we in the UK think the euro zone, is expensive at present. It is 13% more expensive at the end of May 2003 than it was in Jan 2003, but when you live here you don't notice unless you travel.

We were visiting 2 adorable little villages in the Cotswolds, Upper and Lower Slaughter when we saw this sign. My husband insisted taking a picture of it because of the graphic steaming pile of dog poo. Be warned you will be prosecuted for unwanted dog feces!!!

  • Henley's famous 3 in 1. I was impressed! - United Kingdom
    Henley's famous 3 in 1. I was
    impressed!

I often say to people I could write a small book on the different toilets, flushing systems, hand basins and drying mechanisms I used while travelling.
Each visit was fraught with frustration on how to work the above devises. Finally I figured it all out.
Sometimes flushing only required a wave of the hand. Damn thing frightened the life out of me and I nearly dropped my camera into the loo when I accidently tripped it off! Taps were even more complicated. Mostly just a push down devise. And you have to be quick as only a measured amount of water comes out at one time. This I must say is a great way to conserve water.
The prize for the best hand washing set up of all goes to the Public facilities in Henley in Arden. A cheery wave of the hand and out comes some nice soap followed shortly after by the water. After a quick rinse the whole thing turns into a blow dryer. And you don't have to move a step. Wonderful contraption. Harrods didn't even have one!

  • An amazingly empty motorway! - United Kingdom
    An amazingly empty motorway!
    by leics
It is against the law to use your mobile phone whilst you are driving, and penalties are steep. You can still use a hands-free set. Remember that not all traffic police cars are marked or obvious, and that many stretches of motorway are continually filmed. It's not worth the risk!

    Mobile catering vans.

  • United Kingdom Page by leics
  • You may see mobile vans selling food and drink at tourist spots or in laybys (places to stop on main roads). Be wary of these .......the ones at tourist spots may rip you off, and their hygiene is not always good. It is better to buy food and drink from shops to take with you, or look for a pub or cafe nearby.
