DO NOT SLOW DOWN FOR SCHOOLS

by DAO

Shocking? You don’t know the half of it! Yes. That is a picture of a School Sign you would find along the busy road. It does not tell you to slow down or stop. There are NO signs that tell you to slow down or stop or even caution around a school here. There are NO reduced speed zones in front of any school. There are no flashing lights – nothing. You can drive past the school at any time at the posted speed limit. The lowest is 30mph (48 kph). Many schools are in urbanised areas where cars are parked on both sides of the street making it very hard to see the kids about to cross here and there. It may not say it, but please slow down if you are driving when you see these signs!

HEDGEHOG KILLERS !!!!

by DAO

This is a Reliant Robin. Yes it is a car. Yes it is a car with 3 wheels. Invented in the 1970’s this odd little vehicle has a reputation for killing small, cute, little hedgehogs. Just think about it. With a 4-wheeled car Mr. Hedgehog may actually be passed OVER by the car instead of squished into road pizza by the tyres. Mr. Hedgehog doesn’t stand a chance with these little cars. The front wheel will mash anything the rear tyres don’t manage. Bummer for Mr. Hedgehog.By the way these things can do 80mph (129 kph)! Not necessarily a grand idea on a vehicle that could flip more easily than a normal car. Before you laugh at these odd cars or react in horror at the wildlife killing abilities – consider this:They pay less road tax because of the small engine and they can have air-conditioning and good stereo systems. They also will cost you less to buy than a nice new 4-wheeled car, get VERY...

DON’T THROW IT !

by DAO

Is the wrapper of your chocolate bar worth over $100? It will be if you throw it on the ground. Many cities in the UK now have Wardens (read pseudo-Police) that walk around town centres looking for people littering. They then fine you ON THE SPOT. There are rubbish bins and it’s just not worth it.

BAD BRITISH PLUMBING NO. 3

by DAO

OK! Can anyone see the potential health issue here in the Gent’s toilet? For some reason builders in this country want men to stand as humanly possible to other men when they use the urinal. No cubicle, no small walls, no space. Then just to take the absolute **** they do something like this. I really did not want to wash my hands after using this facility in Doncaster. Bad Builders! Bad!

BAD BRITISH PLUMBING NO. 2

by DAO

I have no doubt that when water taps were first invented they had separate taps like these. Not only are they still made like that here, they are all too common. So what’s the problem? Well one is hot and one is cold. You are supposed to put the plug in the sink and mix the water together to wash you hands. Now where does it all go wrong? Well for starters there are rarely and sink plugs in these in public toilets found in pubs, bars, restaurants, etc. Then there is the idea of actually touching the sink that God knows what has been doing God knows what in. This can only be done if you have that missing plug. This is also a huge waste of water. So what have you got left? That leaves getting your hands scaled by the superheated water or freezing cold hands in winter. That’s because most toilets in the UK are unheated! You could move your hands back in forth in a hellish attempt to get...

BAD BRITISH PLUMBING NO. 1

by DAO

Does this sink look a little small? Of course it does. You really couldn’t actually get full sized adult hands into it. Then it gets worse. Much much worse. You see the twisty water control? Well to get hot water you have to turn the stupid thing ALL THE WAY AROUND. This means that the water comes out with immense pressure, lands inside the stupidly small sink and then ricochets right on to YOU! It of course lands mostly in the area around your crotch as this is the low level they have put the sink at. You now leave the toilet cubicle and return to an open-plan office looking like you just wet yourself. Then they start talking about you….I actually banned my builders from installing these idiotic sinks and taps when I used to oversee the building of retail shops. They couldn’t understand why. I can’t understand why they are still manufactured. They waste water and create a cleaning and...

Beggars

by Wowmoment

Sadly London has its fair share of people asking you for money. I will share my philosophy for what its worth and you can ignore it if you wish. I NEVER give to beggars. I DO give money to those who delight and entertain me in some way, be it music, juggling or whatever. I DO buy things I don't particularly need to support a local economy, a string of beads a picture or carving etc. I consider this approach respects the receiver and the giver. I adopt this wherever I am in the world and I feel comfortable with it.In London, I know that many so called 'beggars' are reputedly 'professionals' and go back to their comfortable homes at night. Make up you own mind, the choice is yours.

Driving standards in UK.

by mwe

As you may have gathered by reading other tips on this page, YOU WILL SEE THE BEST AND WORST DRIVERS YOU HAVE EVER SEEN IN BRITAIN.Rather than talk in general terms about what you may encounter, I thought I'd log a few actual examples of the lowest of the low I've encountered on Britain's roads. These are the real nutters, wilful bad driving, not things resulting from mistakes or momentary inattention. I won't give full vehicle regstration marks, because the vehicles in question might be loaned to or stolen by the "drivers" in question, or might be company or rented vehicles used by many drivers. Also, they might have been sold to someone less psychotic and with more sense by the time you read this. 1) On London-bound 40 MPH section of A30 in Virginia Water, aproximately 6:30pm, Wednesday 25th April, 2007. Black Alfa-Romeo JTD 4-door. Registration began with E and had "05" year mark. The...

Thanks to SUPERBREAK Representative

by NedHopkins

For nearly five (5) months I submitted claims, with documentation, to American Express Platinum Club Customer Service (AEPCCS). Though AmEx promises to investigate disputed charges, the extent of AEPCCS’s “investigation” was to ask a SUPERBREAK representative for an explanation. Three times AEPCCS rejected my claim. After I had posted complaints on this and other boards, SUPERBREAK’s internet marketing manager, David Ranby, asked for details. I e–mailed him the same information I had sent AEPCCS (without my documentation).Today, less than a week since Mr Ranby first offered to help, the £895 was refunded to my AmEx account.I express my thanks to Mr Ranby and to those others who wrote SUPERBREAK on my behalf. It is refreshing — and reassuring — to find, in the often cutthroat travel business, someone of Mr Ranby’s integrity.I would now not hesitate to book through superbreak.com on my next...

SPEED CAMERAS !

by DAO

Speed Cameras are evil. There is no reasoning with them and they do work, all too effectively. There are about 6,000 speed cameras on UK roads – and the numbers are growing. They are both fixed and mobile. At the very least you usually do get a waning sign. If you do see a camera sign, SLOW DOWN! Below are the different types of mechanical beasts that they use to drive up your motoring and insurance costs:Gatso Sited at the road side, Gatso speed cameras use radar technology to measure speed and a photo of the back of the vehicle is taken. There are markings on the road to do this. Can only see from behind, so you could say someone else was driving. Truvelo Sited at the road side, forward facing Truvelo speed cameras use loops in the road to trigger when a speed limit is exceeded. Takes a frontal picture. They can see the drivers face. You are so caught! SPECS Sited on yellow overhead...
