Seasonal difficulties.

by mwe

The southern UK is a pretty temperate place. It rarely gets colder than -4C/25F. It rarely exceeds 35C/95F in summer. Rainfall in southern & eastern England is consistently around 20 to 25 inches per year. ...So you think things would be hunky-dory & the authorities would take the mainly minor & predictable problems they face in their stride? ...WRONG!!!WINTER: Literally half an inch of snow causes absoloute mayhem. Go out, or watch television & you'll see people skidding around & losing control in snow-covered vehicles on sidelights, with an A4-sized peephole cleared from their windscreen in blizzards. 'The wrong kind of snow' causes cancellations & delays on the railways.Moronic local radio traffic reporters genuinely say things like "There has been very heavy snow. Up to an inch has fallen".LATE SPRING: Roadsigns get hidden by foliage (Hello, spring is a predictable annual...

Openly criticising government policies.

by mwe

Rather like the almost weekly incidents of pedestrians being mown down by 'hit & run' drivers, there are almost weekly incidents of people who protest against government policies getting into serious trouble. At the 2005 Labour Party (the current party of government in the UK) conference, a man of 83, who is a long-established member of the Labour Party was ejected from the conference building by a bunch of 'heavies' after he shouted "nonsense" when a minister made a speech praising the UK's involvement in the US-led war in Iraq.In 2006 a woman from Derby was jailed for non-payment of Council Tax (a local services tax) because she was protesting against her previously nice area being taken over by druggies & drug dealers & the authorities doing virtually nothing about it.For those outside Britain, the newspaper front page pictured is the UK's top-selling mid-market national daily...

Murdered outside a police station!

by mwe

In 2006 someone was stabbed to death outside a police station. Not in an inner city, or some other place with a rough reputation, but Henley-on-Thames, which has some of the most expensive property in Britain & has a lot of wealthy residents, such as the late George Harrison, who died partly as a result of injuries inflicted by a drug-taking psychiactric patient who broke into his home. The police station was not opened to the public at the time of the murder, but there were officers inside. It's not clear what exactly the officers were doing in the station & why at least one of them weren't patrolling, but I hope they weren't disturbed by the noise of someone being murdered outside their building.

Political correctness.

by mwe

Ensuring people who've traditionally been excluded from positions of power & influence can get jobs where their gender or race were marginalised should be good. However, the UK PC lobby dislikes those who traditionally held power: middle-aged, indigenous British, upper-class men, who pre-WW2 got top jobs because of who their fathers were, etc..In 2006, a suitably qualified young man was rejected by Gloucestershire police. Challenging his rejection he was told the force was "too white, too male" & they were recruiting female & ethnic people, even if less suitable than male applicants.A reality TV programme recently sparked a race-row because a contestant described another contestant as "that Indian" & asked if she lived in a shack. The PC lot jumped on this as 'racist'. Yet indigenous British people who move to another part of Britain often get described as "that cockney", "that...

Lawless, anti-social behaviour.

by mwe

As with the almost weekly incidents of people being deliberately knocked down crossing the road & people in trouble for criticising the goverment, get a UK daily newspaper every day for a week & you'll almost certainly read of someone who's in serious trouble for standing up to lawbreakers....These aren't the kind of trigger-happy gun fanatics, "hang 'em, flog 'em, eye for an eye" types & retired Sergeant Majors you might expect, but often softly spoken, short, thin, quiet, peace-loving middle-aged women.Recent incidents include a female schoolteacher arrested for pointing a toy gun at some louts who hung around her neighbourhood committing offences and a woman arrested after she 'clipped round the ear' one of a crowd of louts who sat on her garden wall dropping litter, making excessive noise & riding up & down on bikes.Last week (Jan, 2007) in Scarborough, a fish & chip shop owner & his...

Parking.

by mwe

Someone visiting UK might think the only parking offence is to park on single yellow lines during the working day, or park on double yellows, as these are the only things that seem to be targeted. You might not realise this by looking around present-day Britaiin, but (like North America, Australia, Sweden, etc.) it's an offence to park on the 'wrong' side of the road during darkness & an offence to park on footpaths. But, of course, people committing the latter two offences are harder to bring to justice (it might not be possible to trace ownership of the vehicle, they might refuse to pay the fine, or generally be difficult), whereas people committing the yellow line offences are much easier targets, as they're likely to be busy (cash-rich/time-poor) people who find paying up is easier than arguing. This injustice means someone who stops on yellow lines outside an electrical shop to pick...

Gypsy Cabs

by aurora77

When arriving in London, be careful when approached by cab drivers, they're called "gypsy cabs". Don't take a cab from someone who approaches you. Find a trustworthy cab yourself by following the airport's signs.

watch where you park!

by margaretvn

This is what happens if you park near a harbour and then go for a three hour lunch with Berni and Carl. It just happened to be the day the UK had the highest tides for several years! A few minutes later and we could have waved bye bye to the Smart as it sailed away. We were at Blakeney for lunch and had a fantastic time.

Bring Money!

by gaolei

The exchange rate will quickly eat away at those US dollars you are bringing. I exchanged $100 at the Manchester airport and only got 48 pounds. They charged 1.92 plus commission. In the ATM it was 1.82 and credit card charges. If you go to Mc Donalds and order the new roast beef sanwich meal it has the same numerical price as a US Mc Donalds, about 6 Pounds. 6 Pounds is $11 USD! The $16 USD steak at TGI Fridays is 16 Pounds or $30. Want a beer with that thirty dollar steak? Add six dollars. The cheap hotels ,such as Premiere Travel Inns and Ibis cost over 50 Pounds, close to $100 USD per night and the room has a 6 channel TV and no phone! You will quickly learn England is very expensive.

Toilets. The complete A - Z guide.

by lou31

I often say to people I could write a small book on the different toilets, flushing systems, hand basins and drying mechanisms I used while travelling. Each visit was fraught with frustration on how to work the above devises. Finally I figured it all out. Sometimes flushing only required a wave of the hand. Damn thing frightened the life out of me and I nearly dropped my camera into the loo when I accidently tripped it off! Taps were even more complicated. Mostly just a push down devise. And you have to be quick as only a measured amount of water comes out at one time. This I must say is a great way to conserve water. The prize for the best hand washing set up of all goes to the Public facilities in Henley in Arden. A cheery wave of the hand and out comes some nice soap followed shortly after by the water. After a quick rinse the whole thing turns into a blow dryer. And you don't have to...
