Mobile catering vans.

by leics

You may see mobile vans selling food and drink at tourist spots or in laybys (places to stop on main roads). Be wary of these .......the ones at tourist spots may rip you off, and their hygiene is not always good. It is better to buy food and drink from shops to take with you, or look for a pub or cafe nearby.

Watch out for Animals!

by Geoff_Wright

As you may have guessed, I am fond of horse riding. When travelling on the main roads in UK you are not likely to come across many horses and riders, and if you do, you will usually spot them fairly easily. This is not always the case on the minor roads, and more particularly so in counties like Devon and Cornwall, which have very narrow lanes bordered with high hederows. Unless you are in a village area with a speed restriction on the road, you are permitted to drive at at least 50 MPH (80 KPH). Please, therefore, think not only of other traffic on the roads, but also there may well be a horse or two around the next bend. Unfortunately road accidents in UK involving horses and riders are far too common. Horses and riders should always be passed at slow speed and given as wide a berth as possible. Most sensible riders will move in to a safe place in order to let you pass. A number of...

Steep Stairs

by 78Eva

The UK is full of small, terraced houses. The houses are generally much smaller and narrower than I'm used to from other places in Europe. The stairs is most of those houses are very steep and very narrow. I fell down the stairs of my house in Durham and broke my hand. And from British friends I have heard that this kind of accident is not uncommon in the UK.Walk down the stairs carefully and slowly. Don't walk or run down on socks, wear slippers with rubber bottoms

The Accent

by keeweechic

Understanding the accent in this part of the world is sometimes a challenge. Get them to speak slower and you will have better luck. They have some interesting little sayings. Driving : Watch out for sheep driving on country roads. The little villages also have very narrow lanes and roads, take care in passing.

Keeping your money safe

by jayhawk2000

DO NOT wear bum bags as these can be pulled off by nimble fingers. Keep bulky things bundled up into a day bag or small rucksack, one with a strap that goes around your waist as well as strong shoulder straps. A padlock on the zipper will foil fast-action thieves.DO NOT overload yourself with a camera, handbag, shopping bags, ice cream cone etc. When your hands are full and you have dangly bits hanging off your body, you are more likely to have something snatched. DO NOT keep anything valuable in an outside pocket of your rucksack. Sneaky fingers will find their way inside, especially on busy shopping streets and crowded public transport.DO NOT let the countryside lull you into complacency. Car parks at countryside pubs and parks attract thieves, so do not leave valuables sitting out in view in your car.TAKE EVERY PRECAUTION. Take out travel insurance. Have the serial numbers of your...

Currency 2003 - Bring enough money with you.

by Galahad

All the countries in the Kingdom use the Pound Sterling. Whichever, country you are in (ie England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or Gibralter, it is still the Pound Sterling .For those of you from outside the European Common Market area, such as the States the euro zone must seem expensive and the UK even more so. Be warned to bring enough money with you, even we in the UK think the euro zone, is expensive at present. It is 13% more expensive at the end of May 2003 than it was in Jan 2003, but when you live here you don't notice unless you travel.

Watch your dog poo

Be prepared for all sorts of weather!

by J.I.M

Britain has a reputation for having very unpredictable weather. One moment it can be a nice beautiful sunny day, the next a thundercloud will rise from the horizon and cast darkness, lightning and tons of water upon you! Expect the unexpected!

Theft

by wrldtravler

Over the past few years the crime rate in england has increased greatly. There is a huge influx of refugees and unemployed youth who are eager to get a quick buck from the unsuspecting tourist. I would suggest making sure your bags are in a safe place before venturing out to explore the city or countryside and also make sure to travel lightly while on these excursions. Just make sure your not being an easy target and always keep a watchful eye.

and the Americans drive on the right.

by Ash59

To show that there are no hard feelings, did you know that The Good ol' U.S. of A. used to once drive on the left? It wasn't until they kicked out the British that they changed their ways. Want to know why? Read on then. The change came about because of the pioneers that trekked their way west. A lot of the pioneers did not have enough waggons to ride on, so they walked. In places, they would also lead their team of horses through any hazards. A right handed person naturally would hold a halter with their right hand. meaning they would stand left of the horse. This made sense and developed further as the trailways developed. To best control the horse and to avoid collisions between wide carts, it was best for the person leading the horse or cart to walk between the vehicle and oncoming traffic, thus keeping the cart or horse to the right. This also facilitated conversations between people...
