Driving around the country roads in England gives the traveller to come across wonderful examples of the English art of thatching. Near Westbury close to the Black Horse pub, we saw a thatched shelter, Inside was astone making a sundial. The workmanship of the roof was very interesting.

This horse is very modern in appearance compared with the one at Uffington , but is now cemented over and painted white. It replaced the original horse in 1778.
The White Horse was cut directly into the chalk that forms the hill, but this needed regular attention to keep the shape and the white colour of the chalk
In 1742 was published an illustration of the horse showing a squat animal with its head facing right and carrying a saddle . It had its tail curving upwards. It is thought that this is linked back to an Iron Age cult , as an Iron Age fort is adjacent to the White Horse.
There is a viewing point on the Bratton Road, but can be seen from other places too.
