The detail

by Jenniflower

I am a firm believer that it's all in the detail. This photo is of a piece of the pavement in St Peter's Square (not sure why they call it a square though as it is round! haha). I think this adds to the authenticity and historical significance of this place. As I have said before, it is almost too much to take in, and for us 'happy-snappy' types an absolute paradise )

A well-rounded family destination

by Jenniflower

I would definately rate Rome as a desired family destination for a holiday (Aside from the difficulty getting a buggy/pram around that is). The kids are just as enthralled as the adults. The one factor that determines one's enjoyment is also the sun and its intensity! Having kids in the searing heat is not fun. But with extra care, sunscreen, hats and taking frequent visits to shady spots, kiddies love Rome. They are mesmerised by the huge buildings. A pity that our little niece was too small at 1 years old, to fully appreciate where she was and what she was seeing!

Do your homework!

by Jenniflower

Before going on holiday, we always do a lot of researching and homework prior to our trip. Since being on VT, we naturally look for advice and tips on this site. We like to know a certain amount about the area we are going to, the culture, the history etc. It puts one on the right footing I think, and can be very handy.

Child friendly

by Jenniflower

Having lived in a city for the last few years (London), the one thing we have noticed, which is troubling, is that people are often intolerant of children, especially on public transportation. Here, Rome is refreshingly different! Instead of viewing a young child as a 'noise' and a nuisance (which is the feeling you get in the UK towards kids often), in Rome, the Italians go out of their way to say hello to you and your child, smiling at her and sayign all kinds of lovely things about your 'bambino'.What is different here is the culture. Italy is much more family-focussed, the family is pivocal to society and the community still. In England (in our experience), the emphasis is on oneself more, and not the family or community generally. I am even shocked when I read some people referring to people who have kids in England as 'breeders' (!!!!!), and that having a child is 'a lifestyle...

People watching

by Escadora7

Fact: Every year thousands of people pack St. Peter's square to hear and see the Pope. Thousands cross it to reach St. Peter's Basilica. And thousands more pass through on their way to explore the riches and culture of Vatican city. I love this snap: taken on St. Peter's square it expresses the diversity of people that pass through better than words ever could.............................................................................

Entering the Vatican City

by Glorija

It could be very crowded so bring some water along if there is a spring. We had a bad weather so the only thing everyone needed was umbrela. Do not forget to bring a lot of patience along with you and just hope you will soon be the one to enter the Vatican doors. Ofcourse inside a guard will be waiting you ... so do not bring any weapon along ;)

The wall around the Vatican

by sim1

Hmmm, I doubt if I could call it my fondest memory. But it sure is the funniest moment of my visit to the Vatican! On this picture you can see the wall that surrounds the Vatican. And wow, do I know this wall !!!! Did you know that the wall surrounding the Vatican is 3,2 km long?? Well, I most certainly do, hahaha. Yep, I walked ALL the way around the Vatican!I was dropped off by a bus at the Vatican close to the entrance of the Saint Peter's Square, but I didn't have a map with me. So I tried to figure out which way to go, left or right....... I chose left.... oops! There is something you should now about me, I am just terrible in directions, I always go the wrong way. I am good at reading maps though, but without it, I am totally lost! I have no sense of direction at all. And that was what happened this time. I was so close to the entrance.... if I only had turned right. But I decided...

Exploring the Vatican Museum

by sswagner

First and foremost, the entrance is not at St. Peter's Square and the basilica. Rather, it is on the north side of the Vatican walls. If you are coming from Termini station and this is to be your first stop, you might be better off taking the subway to Ottaviano station and then walking a few blocks to the entrance. To me, this would be better than taking the crowded bus #64 with its numerous stops to St. Peter's and then walking. It helps to have a map to pinpoint these locations. Now that you are at the museum, drink plenty of water before beginning your tour (especially in the summer). Pay the admission charge and then begin exploring this large museum. If the Sistine Chapel is on your mind, you will not see this until the very end. Relax and enjoy the rest of the museum. There are many works of art in here. The Raphael Rooms are also near the top of most people's list of "must sees"...

Exploring St. Peter's Basilica

by sswagner

In Europe's smallest country lies one of its largest churches. St. Peter's Square is surrounded by colonnades that "embrace" the people as they enter the Vatican. Statues line the tops of the colonnades and the basilica. You will enter the basilica from the front as it is intended. There is no admission charge to enter the vast chamber of the basilica and the papal tombs below. There is an admission charge to climb the steps that lead to the dome and the cupola. The interior is vast and is often punctuated by beams of light coming from windows high in the building. Beams can also streak across the dome's interior. There are many monuments and altars to explore. The main altar lies underneath the dome and is unmistakeable. In front of the large altar and canopy is the place believed to hold St. Peter's remains. This church is so vast, that even when a lot of people come here to visit, you...

by Tamiandaiden

Make sure you are inline early if you wish to visit the vatican museum. We lined up around 11am to enter. We got to the front of the line at 12:20pm which is the exact time they stop letting people in. We qued on a monday morning and it still took nearly an hour and a half so que early to get in or face dissapointment like we did 6 people from the front. Cause once 12.20pm hits noone gets in till the next day!!
