St.Peter's

by globetrott

St.Peter's is certainly a MUST, when visiting Rome !Be prepared to have your luggage and body scanned, before you may enter the church. These portable scanners will NOT damage your films in the Camera ( I was a bit afraid as I had a few loose films in my pockets, but everything was fine !!)Only small luggage like handbags and camera-bags are allowed.Have decent clothings, NO shorts and sleeveless shirts. To enter the church is free of charge, but to climb up the dome you have to pay a small fee.----------------------------------------------------------------- The view from the top of St.Peters is simply great and worth all the efforts ! You have to climb a lot of steps and sometimes it gets rather narrow and small - this is the reason, why elderly and heavy people are not allowed to climb up there!

Being Guided is better

by Kbird009

With so many things in the museums and so many museums themselves, a tour guide is a must. I HIGHLY recommend one. Ours made our trip all the more meaning full. We actually knew what we were looking at for the 1st time in our whole trip. The Basilica. Sorry Sistine, but the Basilica is amazing.

Here is one of the many sculptures in the Vatican Museums...beautiful huh? For some reason this was one of my favourites that we came across... There were so many different sculptures though - all made with so much care and love!

This is a photo of St Peters Basilica from the front courtyard area...it's the first view most people will get... The Basilica is such a huge building!! I really recommend that you visit it if you're in Rome...it won't take too much out of your time and is worth seeing.

Check out the inside of St Peters Basilica for sure. We visited heaps of churches during our time in Europe but this one is so huge and amazing inside! It's definately worth a look... We didn't get any photos inside the basilica though, I really wish we had...from memory you are not allowed to take photos inside though.

The smallest souvereign state in the world

by tini58de

The Vatican City State is the smallest sovereign state in the world, occupying an area of little less than ½ km2 in the center of Rome. It covers St. Peter's Square, the Basilica of St. Peter, the Vatican Museums and adjacent buildings, and the garden behind all this. A number of major churches in Rome and the Papal palace in Castel Gandolfo have extraterritorial status and are under the jurisdiction of the Holy See.The official website of the Vatican is http://www.vatican.va/ Almost accidentally stumbling into a mass held by Pope John Paul.........

From the Vatican to Circus Maximus - Rome in a Day

by cruisingbug

Two tips for Vatican City:If you want to see the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, expect to spend quite a bit of time winding through the Vatican Museum. "This way to the Great Egress" went through my mind as we followed endless signs to the Chapel. Also, ladies, bring something to cover your shoulders in order to enter St. Peter's. Luckily, I read about this before I left the ship so I didn't have to "wing it" with the paper napkin-type cover up.

The Basilica

Remember also to speak only in whispers. This is a 'living' church and people worship here so that should be respected. When we were there, a mass was on and there were tourists shouting to each other and disturbing the people who were at mass. I am sure it is terribly frustrating for both the clergy and the congregation.

St Peter's Basilica

Obviously, you must go to St Peters Basilica. This is an amazing work of art and I never get tired of walking around it. The 'paintings' on the walls are actually mosaics and are really impressive. Because mosaics are not damaged by light, it is safe to take flash photos. It is free to visit and although I have heard of people who have had to queue, we have never had this problem.Be sure to dress properly, though and also be prepared for long queues to get through security. Anyone with bare shoulders or shorts will be turned away. Don't try to get away with it - you will be wasting your time! I have seen many people turned away while queuing to get in.I carry a light linen shirt to throw over my shoulders and generally wear long skirts when visiting. A scarf will do to cover your shoulders but you must also make sure your legs are covered to the knees. Also, the entrance is on the right if...
