Vatican Museums

by CandS

Wander through the Vatican Museums... There are some really beautiful paintings in there. It costed us 18,000 lire each to get into the museums but it was really worth it. I just wished we'd had longer inside. Our trip was rushed but we still saw alot. At the end of the museums you'll come across the famous Sistine Chapel...it takes a while to get there but it really is beautiful in there.

The Vatican Museum was an excellent museum. I especially enjoyed the Sistine Chapel, having learned about in my high school art class. Thus, it was especially interesting to me. See my Rome page for more information.

St.Peter's Basilica

Here is a view of St.Peter's Basilica as seen from a window of the Vatican Museum. The cathedral and the museum of Vatican City were both very interesting and magnificent. The two attractions border the country of Vatican City.

Ponte Angelo

by sandysmith

The castel is linked to Rome across the Tiber by the Ponte Angelo a beautiful bridge. In the Jubilee year of 1450, just before christmas, as a huge number of pilgrims were crossing the bridge for the vatican, the ancient bridge collapsed under the weight. More than 200 pilgrims perished in the river. Of the bridge the three central arches survived. Pope Nicholas V ordered the repair of the bridge which was first done hastily.Later Gian Lorenzo Bernini was given the task of restoring the bridge. Bernini made the designs for the statues that currently adorn the bridge and their organisation on the bridge. The actual work with the statues was performed by his pupils. Of course this is also a great spot for reflections ;-)So cross the bridge and explore the historic centre of Rome (much more on my Rome page!) if you have any energy left after the delights of the Vatican.

Sending mail from the Vatican

by kim_shell

If you plan to send a letter or post card from the Vatican you must use stamps from the local post office. There are 2 post offices at the Vatican and the post boxes are easily recognisable as they are Canary Yellow.

Castel Sant'angelo

by sandysmith

Originally built (AD 135-39) by Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his successors, it was later decorated and fortified as a place of refuge for the popes.Although outside of the Vatican city itself it was connected to the Vatican by a secret passage for their escape route in times of danger. It was used as a fortress and prison until 1870 and is now a museum - the Museo Nazionale Militare and of Art.

Vatican State

by sandysmith

A sovereign state since February 1929 and ruled by the Pope, this is the center of power for Catholics all around the world. In this state within a state - the smallest in the world at just 44 hectares - you will find sights such as St. Peter's Catholic Church, St. Peter's Square, Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, Raphael Rooms, and Castel Sant' Angelo. The Vatican has its own army (supplied by Switzerland), airport (actually a helipad), train station, radio station, currency and postal service. The Vatican money is legal everywhere in Italy, and the Vatican postal system is more reliable than the Italian postal system, so if you're mailing something back home, bring it by Saint Peter's Square.

Side Entrance Into the Square

by mrclay2000

Most everyone who has been to Rome has stepped into Vatican City through the very mouth of its tentacular arms. This is certainly the way the buses enter, but there are a few smaller gates in the midst of the collonades that will access Piazza San Pietro. One of the surprising things about these smaller entrances is their humble approach from the outside, even when standing next to the mighty line of columns. Carts vending travel brochures, postcards and other merchandise often sit quietly in the shadows, only a few steps away through the forest of columns from the most grandiose square in the city.

Awesome!

by tvdm

What is strange about the world's smallest country is that is possesses one of the world's largest buildings, squares and art collections! A paradox, perhaps, but don't worry - you'll be impressed anyway. Apart from seeing Michelangelo's dome, Pietà and Sistine Chapel, the mere fact of walking along St Peter's Square is a memorable experience in itself!

High walls around the country

This is the wall of Vatican, close to the entrance of the Vatican museum--------------------------------------------------------------------- There is no way to look behind the walls of Vatican, except you climb up St.Peters and look down from the dome.
