Vatican - entrance for cars

by globetrott

When you walk around the high walls you will see this gate on the left of St.Peter.-------------------------------------------------------------------- At this gates, cars may enter the Vatican after a control by the 'Swiss Guards' who look a bit different here - they have less colorful uniforms and more efficient weapons, and there is also a strong and more than 4 meters high gate that will be closed at night .

The Swiss Guards

by globetrott

The Swiss Guards in their traditional costumes are the " policemen " of the Vatican authorities. They will make sure, nobody will enter the gates to the secret part of Vatican--------------------------------------------------------------------- BUT : At this gate on the left of St.Peter you may enter Mo-Sat. 07.00 a.m. - 01.00 p.m. if you tell them " Camposanto Teutonico "Camposanto Teutonico is a small graveyard and it is open to the public within that restricted hours.

Citta del Vaticano

by globetrott

It is the smallest country in the world - and still a really GREAT place !This is a stamp-block of Vatican and I added a few interesting spots on the " map " :Camposanto TeutonicoVatican Museum-entranceTrain-station ( for use by the Pope ONLY !! )-------------------------------------------------------------------- It is almost by all sides hidden by very high walls with only a few entrance-doors, guarded by the famous 'Swiss Guards' in their historical costumes.I tried to walk around and have a closer look, BUT - NO way to see anything else than these walls

The Circular Square

by mrclay2000

To get this view of Piazza San Pietro, you'll have to enter the Vatican Museums (outside the city walls on the north side) and climb all the way to the top of St Peter's dome. The entirety of Vatican City (the basilica and square and museums) is a vast panorama that would still marvel the most discriminating eyes after days of intensive study.

Apostles - A Final Gallery

by mrclay2000

The twelve apostles in larger than life representations look down from the brow of St Peter's. In every way, the entire basilica and museums is an endless labyrinth of treasure and artwork, a city unto itself.

St Peter's Dome

by mrclay2000

Obviously St Peter's dome looks beautiful from so many parts of the city, but especially so when paired or presented with many of the lesser domes of St Peter's basilica. The best views are often from the Vatican's own roof.

Vatican Museum

by Aaron7

My favorite memory of the Vatican was wandering through the halls of the museum there. The artistry in this museum is absolutely amazing. The tapestries on the wall actually followed our movement with their eyes. I remember looking at a carving above a doorway only to find that when I actually walked below the carving.. it wasn't a carving at all, only an elaborate painting!
