The Vatican museums are exceptionally important because of the richness and prestige of the master pieces brought together under various popes over the centuries, as well as for their sumptuous setting.

The Coliseum was partially destroyed but it is still enormous and one of the largest Ancient Roman ruins. In A.D. 70, the emperor Vespasian began construction of the 45-50,000 seat stadium (that's larger than some baseball stadiums of today!). The building was completed in A.D. 75 and inaugurated by Vespasian's son Titus. It was used for shows, mostly gladiatorial combats with man against man or man against beast. Trap doors in the floor would allow famous gladiators to make a grand entrance, or to allow the Caesar to spring animals into the arena. Apparently they could even flood the floor and hold mock naval battles in. Sailors would hoist sails over the top to shade the fans in the Hot Roman Sun..

Often people are in such a rush to get into the actual square of St Peter's and into the chuch that Bernini's magificent columns almost take second place. Views that like are special in my mind and give a sense of the grandeur of the Square about to be entered.

As you enter through the colonades into the square look out for this water fountain. Its so ornate and beautifully decorated that it deserves a picture I think. Plus you can take the opportunity to refill any water bottles - it get so hot in the square in the summer. This pigeon was thirsty too!

This is the entrance to the Vatican on the left side of St.Peter's. - The only chance to enter here, might be if you tell the guards, you would like to go to 'Camposanto Teutonico' ( the german graveyard ), that is just around the corner. Access will be granted only at certain times in the morning.

There is the Vatican Museum on the right. - And if you have a close look - there are lots of empty parking-spaces ! - - - - - - but only for those, who are allowed to enter 'Citta del Vaticano '

There is a souvenirshop on the level of St.Peter's roof and the 12 apostel - statues. And you may put your postcards with vatican-stamps for collectors into the Vatican mailbox......its much quicker and faster delivered than Italian mail...

This is 'Camposanto Teutonico' - the german graveyard, where the son of Goethe and many others are burried. It is open to the public at restricted opening-hours :Mo-Sat. 07.00 a.m. - 01.00 p.m.
